My best guess would be that it would be a 5-10 minute cab ride depending on time of day and traffic. It really is not far but there is a lot of construction right now on the road that the bridge over the river coming from the Hyatt flows into. (this main street actually has the IC on it.) It is indeed walkable and I have walked it many times (from the trade show not the Hyatt) but IMHO it's a pain especially if the weather is cold/rainy/snowy like it was this past week. During the summer months I would say it would be a pleasant 15 minute walk for someone that is reasonably fit.

According to Mapquest.de it is 3.1 km between the two actual hotels. I couldn't get Mapquest.com to do it so I went to the German site since I speak german. You can probably figure it out even if you don't speak German and it will show you the travel route. Travel time is listed as 6 minutes.

28.00 per person for breakfast.

Glad I checked, think it will be the Four Points for me (12.50 breakfast).

God!

The 4p is a rotten 2star and the breakfast is a 12.50 value not a 12.50 bargain. If you want to safe on breakfast get a roll in a baker shop but avoid the 4p.

Got me thinking now.

Thanks for the feedback.

Excluding any breakfast we could get 2 rooms at the Dom for about the same price as 3 @ the 4P (3 rooms cost about 400 more).

If we add the breakfast over our 5 nights with only 2 rooms we would pay 232 more at the Dom if we all had breakfast every day.

Generally like breakfast to discuss schedule for meetings etc. at Messe during the day.

I definitely would not base my choice between the two hotels on the price of breakfast. Like Flying Lawyer said, there are plenty of bakeries to pick something up at. I walked around the corner from the Dom Hotel and had a cup of coffee and a piece of Struessel for under 4 Euro.

While Flying Lawyer used to glorify some hotels, because of single, however very positive personal experiences, he is right on the money in the case of the 4 Points Cologne, really a run down 2-3 star hotel....

If you intend to stay during a fair, I generally recommend to pick a hotel where the average room is solid, because upgrades are hard to come by. The Radisson Blu right across the fair is such a property, even the worst room is actually pretty solid. The worst room at the Dom is very small ( single 32 inch wide bed ) , same at the 4P. Atmosphere for breakfast at the Dom is very nice, though, the 4P breakfast room/restaurant is more like 2 star hotel on an island in Spain with tons of package tourists...there are several cafes a few hundred metres away from the Dom that offer a small breakfast buffet around Euro 10.

not real breakfast, but...

the Dom offers complimentary morning coffee and Chocolate Croissants in the lobby.

If you might consider Marriott options: the Marriott has a great lounge and can be booked via Priceline at about 55-60++ USD

Thanks for the feedback folks. ^

Marriot & Radisson have high rates during our stay at beginning of May as there is a trade fair on.

Think we will do a couple of rooms at the Dom, seems like the best option rather than the 4P.

Just booked 3 rooms on C and P for the end of May. I'm coming into town for 1 night with some friends to go see the Cirque Du Soleil show that will be there at that time. Got a great airfare, going to take the ICE train from FRA into Cologne and cash and points rooms worked out......^

Will report back after. I'm hoping for a nice upgrade but won't be disappointed if I get a standard room.

Upcoming stay in Fall

Just wondering if anyone has any recent updates regarding their recent stayover at the Dom, as I will be in Cologne this fall. Anymore recent experience regarding upgrades for Plats, minibar, etc.?

I stayed there during the european song contest in Dusseldorf this year. Hotel was not as full as expected so I got jr. suite on third floor next to the corner facing the Dome. Hotel staff is pretty friendly and rooms are renovated (at least if you get one of these). But it also has its historical charme on the corridors. When I was there they elevators underwent a renovation so only one that is very slow was in operations.

Breakfast was included in my rate and was pretty good.
For platinums "only" room upgrade to jr. suite and standard amenities. Local gift was a small block of stone form the Dome.

Upgrades are a major major concern, property is popular with consultants, media people etc. and most of them carry a Plat card.

While checking in a couple of months, I was told that they expect around three dozen Plats checking in on a Monday during a period without a fair.

Chances on a weekend are significantly higher and Junior Suite upgrades are common.

Maybe, one of friendly SPG lurkers could shed some light on the situation, whether the corner and executive suites are still in the upgrade pool or not, upgrades to the regular suites seem to be an exception...

The minibar in the junior suites contain:

2 bottles of Coke
2 bottles of Coke light
2 bottles of water ( plus another complimentary bottle in the room )
2 bottles of beer
2 small bottles of fruit juice

BF is Euro 28, 21 if you opt for it the night before.

Property is in the process of renovating the part of the building next door, which was purchased recently. The shops on the Dom level will remain, but above the ground level, they will add some 50 rooms & suites.

Corner suites only; of which, there are seven total.
