Mine was yesterday 7/24 and they offer me $75 after spending $3k which I declined. see here: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/star...-card-109.html

With the date now set as August 18th, will my SPG Amex spend continue to earn 3 Marriott Points till then, or will it drop to 2X on August 1st?
I’m putting as much spend as I can , on the card, as long as I’m earning 3x.

My SPG Amex annual fee was charged in July. I now have about one week left to decide whether I'm going to keep my SPG Amex, or else the $95 becomes non-refundable. (Unfortunately, it looks like they will not give me any retention offer since I accepted one last year.)

Have we heard anything about when the new SPG Luxury Card will be come available -- or when any upgrade offers might be announced? I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should cancel my card while I can still get the $95 back, or gamble on some unknown upgrade offer. If I cancel the card, it will be a hard pull and a ding toward Chase's 5/24 if I decide to apply for the SPG Luxury card later. Also, my SPG card is one of my oldest in my credit history (but that's not a significant factor in my decision). Any opinions would be welcome.

Upgrades were supposed to be offered on 8/9, according to the FAQ on the spgpromos site. Now it just says August. Gary Leff says it will now be available a few days after 8/18.

Are you sure you only have 1 week to cancel and get the fee? I thought it was longer.

It's actually a little more than one week. My annual fee was charged on my last closing date of 7/7. The rep said that I have 30 days to cancel the card or else the fee becomes non-refundable. I decided to wait until the beginning of August to decide. I was hoping to be able to review the SPG Luxury Card offers on August 1st and then go from there. To be honest, I don't need either SPG card as my primary spend card, given the new reward structure. But I would take advantage of the Luxury Card's $300 credit and annual free night. And, I hope, any sign-up incentive they decide to offer.

From the link I didn't get clarity on how points will post for Amex statements that close in August before the 18th: in another thread there's a link to this View from the Wing post indicating that these points will post after the 18th. I don't see definite word on charges in July that are part of the August statement.

We suggest that you reach out to American Express for any additional clarity on this. They should be able to tell you how charges from July will be applied to your August statement.

Amex tells me August 1rst is when you start earning 2 marriott points per dollar from 1 spg per dollar on non category spend. So if your statement cuts 8/15 they will somehow prorate points to match the above? Somehow I find that hard to believe...

By way of loose analogy, DL AMEXes correctly allocate your purchases (for MQM boosts and MQD waivers) to the calendar year a purchase is posted even if your statement does not close until the following year. So it is not a stretch for me to believe that SPG AMEX purchases will earn 1 SPG point if posted before the cutoff and 2 MR points after.
after.

If you can't believe they are capable or willing to do this correctly, that's a reasonable position -- just alter your behavior accordingly.

Amex will keep track of it by having a second currency for the new points.

just spend 30k on my SPG card. I should be getting gold right?

anyone know when that usually kicks in?

Neal Jul 30, 2018 1:36 pm

I plan to no longer use the card after 7/31/18 with the possible exception of hotel stays. First, I’ve had this card since it’s inception. Having a card for that many years, in good standing, can only help one’s credit rating. In addition, I feel the annual free night certificate more than makes up for the $95 annual fee. I had used my Starwood Amex for ALL my expenses and only used a Visa or Mastercard where Amex wasn’t accepted. But that definitely won’t be the case any longer.

Sorry for the dumb question.... Goal is an extra 15 elite nights credit
  • Currently have the SPG Amex (and received 5 night credit in January 2018)
  • I assume this card will not give me 15 elite nights from August 2018
Therefore, if I need 15 elite nights, I need to apply and activate the Chase Marriott card before 26 August. Is that right? ... suck it up, as elite nights are given in 2019 for new sign-ups

tscateh Aug 1, 2018 9:28 pm

My understanding is that all of the cards will give you 15 nights of elite credit, but you can only get the 15 nights once, no matter how many cards you have.
