You can't get 2 credit cards (not charge cards) approved on the same day by Amex. Therefore, the HPs won't be combined.

You should remember the following rules when applying for Amex cards:
-No more than 3 cards approved in the last 90 days.
-No more than 4 cards opened at a time.
-HPs from multiple apps (personal and/or business) will be combined together "if" the apps are approved on the same day. If not, they will result in more than one HP.
-No more than 1 credit card approved per day. You could, however, have more than 1 charge card approved per day. The Starwood Preferred Guest is a credit card so you're very unlikely to have 2 approved on the same day.
-More than 1 app on the same day may require you to call reconsideration. When calling, ask them for approval for only one card at a time and be ready to provide a valid reason for wanting all those cards. You can then, hung up and call again to have the other card approved. It's not really true that they can only approve you for one card per day (as long as they are not credit cards).
-One bonus per lifetime for each app from scratch or every 7 years?

The above is based on my experience and what I've been able to research on my own. If anyone knows otherwise, feel free to correct or elaborate further on any of what I've stated.

So if you apply for both SPG cards, you may get auto-approved for the first one but the 2nd one will be denied or put on hold for further review. Often times, they will leave the 2nd app on hold for like 5 days. After that, they will review it and approve/deny you and then, you will get another HP. If you don't get approved on the same day, you can always call them and have the 2nd app canceled so it won't result in another HP.

Slight refinements:

The 4 card limit refers only to credit cards. An undetermined number of charge cards may also be held. Slightly simplified: Platinum, Gold, and Green are charge cards. Everyday, Blue, Delta, Hilton, and Starwood are credit cards.

The operational definition of lifetime appears to be seven years from cancellation, but it could be as long as eight years because we do not know how often old cards scroll off the live database. If I were reapplying today I would want to have canceled in 2008 or earlier -or- I would ask Customer Service if I had previously held the card.

Excellent! I actually remembered that last year I sent a referral to a friend so I looked it up on my email. Sent 6/5, he applied that day, 6/12 points posted. So looks like a 7-day wait. Nice.

Yes

Hi all,

Just applied for AMEX SPG PERSONAL and got approved... BUT $1000 credit limit...... ... limit. Never got this low expect the chase freedom I applied in college.

I have about $3000 worth of airplane spending i need to do.. would it be okay if I spend $1000, pay it off, do it again for the remaining $2000 even if the statement does not close in the first month? I really want to get this spending requirement done and also book my flights. The reason for asking this is because I saw some threads where if I do that, AMEX gonna blacklist you or something.. which I don't understand why.. I am spending the money and I am paying them off.. not sure what the big deals are here

As a practical matter the American Express lookback period to see if you have held the card appears to be seven years, which means you would need to have closed the account around 2008 to earn another bonus now.

I applied on 2/27/16. Landing page had the "last 12 months" language. However I read on a blog that the language was changed in the actual application terms but I forgot to check during the process. I called today and the representative confirmed I am eligible. Am I safe to assume I'll get the bonus if I meet the spend?

Eligible based on what? Have you had this card before?

You'll be fine. Max it out, pay it off mid cycle, wash, rinse, repeat. If there's a problem, just tell them the truth: The credit line is too low.

You can request a 3x CLI to $3k online after 61 days. After that you can request a 3x CLI after 180 days if approved, or after 90 days if denied. Amex CLIs, when done online, are soft pulls.

I got very excited when I read your post but according to my live chat with an Amex Rep you are guessing wrong. $30k spend cannot be combined between cards to qualify for Gold status. :(

I tried to copy the transcript but was unable to.

SPG Bonus vs Amex in a lifetime?

I a little confused with the once in a life time rule vs getting this card. I got the 100k bonus on a Platinum personal months ago and recently got 75k for a Gold business. Does this mean I can or can't apply for the Starwood personal or business and get the 35k? Same thing for my wife who has NO Amex cards and if she applies for the Starwood personal or business can she ever get a normal Amex bonus in the future?

You are inelible under current terms. Not sure what you had in feb and how it was documented. At this point just do the spend and see what develops...

Those are all different type of cards or products from Amex and they are all mutually exclusive from each other.
The rule referred to pertains to how many times you can churn each card and claim the bonus again. You're allowed to claim one bonus once per product or you should wait at least 7-8 years before reapplying for the same type of card. In other words, if you apply next year for another Platinum card from Amex, you won't get the welcome bonus again. But you can apply for other cards from Amex which can have other bonuses or promotions.
