The Hyatt Regency is significantly better than this property. I haven't been since the renovations spoken of upthread, but I don't think that it could be improved to the level of the HR. Heck, the two Hyatt Place properties in Indianapolis are nicer than this dump (and that's not a term I throw around lightly).
I'll be there on business for an extended period so shopping is not high up my list of priorities as comfort and location to restaurants.

There are a decent amount of restaurants downtown, but I think there is a bit more variety if you stay on the north side of town at one of the Keystone properties. Both the Hyatt Place and Sheraton Keystone are good. The Hyatt Place by the airport has nothing around it worthwhile.
Unfortunately, Indianapolis is filled mostly with chain restaurants. The one exception I found, and it's probably the best restaurant in Indy called Bluebeard. It's downtownish (over on the other side of Lily's campus).

Haven't stayed at the Westin, but it has to be better than the Sheraton.

I would disagree with the suggestion that staying on the northside at Keystone @ the Crossing is better. There are a lot of great places downtown. Lots of breweries popping up (check out TwoDeep @ St. Claire and Capitol) and there are a lot of great LOCAL places on Mass Ave. It's a short uber ride from downtown (about 1 mile from the circle), but lots of good places to eat.

I'm here now.. Wanted to utilize the Sheraton Promo. Not worth it..
One of my worst stay ever. No upgrade as PLT (I'm in a traditional even that plenty of suites are available), 2 out of 4 elevators are not working - took me 15 minutes to get up to my room. (and 10 minutes down again..)
People at front desk are the worst I've ever encountered etc....
One good point - The Club lounge is better than your average Sheraton.
Avoid & stay @ the Westin.

I booked a room here a few months ago when family was in town and overflowing our house. Plat upgrade to a room with a view of the circle. No suites were available as the hotel was sold out with a big convention using all the suites. Room was in good condition, great view, otherwise a standard Sheraton room.
Club lounge was perfectly fine for breakfast - nothing that was a wow factor, but better than most of the club lounges I've experienced as of late.
My office is next door, so happy to answer any other questions on the area.

Trapped in the Bathroom....as a VIP!
Today was one of those travel days that did not quite go as planned, so I could not resist sharing the story, pictures included...
Lots of weather today, so United was nice enough to move me to a direct flight to Indy, the down side being I arrived at the hotel at 10:30 AM. The very nice young lady at the front desk gave me the good news that, despite the early hour, my room was ready, and that I had been upgraded as a "VIP Guest", whatever that meant. She actually did not mention that I was a Lifetime Plat or tell me anything about the lounge, but I was happy to get the keys to my room and be on my way, so no complaints there.
Before I could leave the desk, she did tell me not to take the elevators, since they all were "stuck" last night ,and that I should go through the service doors and use the service elevator. That took a little doing, since the service doors were not marked, but I found someone to show me the way and push open the stuck door to the hall. That stuck door should have been a warning for things to come.
I got to the room, and was pleasantly surprised that it was a small suite, with a separate bedroom and living room. Yes it was older, and a bit beat up, but nice amount of room. That was when I noticed issue #2 - the HVAC did not work in one room- it was just dead with no power or indicator at all on the thermostat. I put in my head a note to tell them about that, after a bathroom stop.
As I entered the bathroom, I also noted the door was old and beat up. Glad I noticed that, since it proved to be the key to my escape. Once inside, I shut the bathroom door. When I was done, I tried to open the door, and it would not budge. The lock was turning, so I could see it was unlocked, and the lock was not engaging the strike plate, but it became apparent something was sticking out from the lock area into the strike plate (we later learned it was a screw that somehow popped out) and the door simply would not open. I pulled and pulled on the handle..and the handle bent, then pulled halfway off. Of course, I had left my cell phone outside in the room, and there was no phone in the bathroom. Yelling for a while did not help- I was at the end of a hallway in this nice suite, with no one around.
It also became apparent there was nothing in the bathroom to use as a tool to get the pins out of the hinges or otherwise pry it open. I decided instead to just try to pull it from underneath, since the handle was now useless for this purpose. Again, it would not budge. Then I remembered the door looked pretty flimsy anyway...so I pulled and pulled till it broke. At least it broke enough to make a hole to climb out.
The really funny part was that while I sat there on the floor. admittedly a bit out of breath after breaking out, a gentleman from guest services let himself into the room. He had a small plate with some gummy bears, m&m's and trail mix and a little tiny bottle of wine, with a note that said "Welcome VIP Guest". He seemed surprised that I was already in the room, though not so surprised when I said I had just broken out of the bathroom. He did not stay to look at the damage, just handed me to snacks and left.
I did call the front desk, and the engineer came up and looked at the damage. He could not open the door, either, and he broke it down the rest of the way to open it, and said I would have to get a new room since he "did not havea ny spare doors" to fix it. He did add I would not be charged since it did not appear to be my fault. He called the front desk, told them to get me a new room, and they called and told me no rooms would be ready for 45 minutes, which was understandable. I told him no problem, I would go get some lunch, and he did offer to pay for lunch in the hotel restaurant. While I was enjoying my salad, he came over and handed me vouchers for up to $75 in the hotel rest, which was nice, though I can't really use them since he made them all expire tomorrow even though I am here for three nights.
On the other hand, the second suite they sent me too is a bit nicer, and even had the same snack and tiny wine bottle waiting ,along with an actual red carpet.
Overall, great people here, friendly, the only issues are with the property condition itself. I did not ask for or expect any compensation, but would pass along my new warning, always take your cell phone in the bathroom with you! I could break the door open, I suspect some people could not.

I was just there on Friday. Yes, there is a Club Lounge on the 10th floor. The rooms are nice enough but the bathrooms are dated. The flush on the toilet is probably the most inconvenient I've seen in a hotel, given that you have to put the lid down to reach it, and the bathroom door basically opens inwards with the toilet right behind it. But friendly staff and great location.
