For some reason, I've been checked into already occupied rooms more often -- not that it's all that often for me -- with Marriott hotels than with other major brand hotel; even otherwise, I run into this happening with Marriott hotels more often than other hotels. Marriott hotels are of course very many and the loyalty program membership rolls are huge, but could this also be a function of how Marriott reservations are pulled up by the hotel front-desk even when they are using photo ID to pull up the reservations?

If I remember correctly, this has happened to me once at Marriott and debatably once at Hyatt - the Marriott experience (JW Panama) was bad as they wrote the wrong room number on the packet, then made me new keys for the wrong room because I couldn't get my key in the elevator to work for the wrong floor. The Hyatt experience (HR LAX) was debatable because I was checked into a room with all of the sheets messed up - not sure if the room was actually occupied or just had not been made up.

Checked into a Marriott tonight. After some confusion because they didn't seem to have the type of room I booked, the person at the front desk offered me the "Presidential Suite" and said you are really going to love the room. I headed upstairs, found a Do Not Disturb sign on the door and, rather than using the keycard, I knocked. Two women answered the door.
So, instead of a very nice upgrade, I ended up with a significant downgrade. He did not seem very concerned or apologetic (he offered breakfast, which I likely won't even be here for).
And when he was issuing me keys to the downgraded room, he asked about my credit card number in a way that made me concerned that the charges from the other guests may end up on my card.
What would you do?

I would tell you the truth, but it is so much less scandalous and less entertaining that I would just be ruining the fun of this thread. So, let's keep the fun double entendres coming!

Happened to us at a Radisson property in Sydney long back (2016). We had an early check in (say 7 am). As we opened the room, we saw bags and returned to the front desk immediately. I don't think the occupants realized. The front desk immediately apologized but we had to wait another hour before the other room was ready (no big deal as it was still very early check in)
Multiple senior folks from the hotel including the GM later reached out to us to apologize later at breakfast and we were treated like VIPs (something we don't really like personally)
