Aloft Strasbourg Etoile

I booked a one night stay on a Friday night in July 2022 as an Ambassador elite member. I am personally not the biggest fan often Aloft brand, but this is one of the best that I have stayed at.

Check In

There was a large group of people (seemed like a large family)  hanging around int he lobby when I arrived. They were just mulling about so I was able to get to the front desk by navigating around them.

I had done online check in but it did not lead to an electronic key. It seems like traditional check in was required. I ended up just using the key cards.

I was recognized as a valued member and offered a platinum amenity of breakfast for two, 500 points or a welcome drink. I initially went forthe points but changed my choice after seeing the breakfast and determining it was a better than usual Aloft breakfast option.

Room

I had booked the lowest category room and was upgraded to a room with a great view of the city.

The room is well-appointed. There are plenty of drawers for storage, an open area to hang clothes, a safe, a mini-fridge with one bottle of water but space for your own drinks. The window blinds are motorized. All of the room controls are located near the door, including the climate control.

The separate toilet is nice if there are two of you. It has a sliding door. The light switch for the entire bathroom area is near the hotel room door, which seemed a little bit strange to me. I tended to just leave the sliding door slightly ajar to get enough light.31383239-84C6-4613-ADB6-CCDEBCB17971.jpeg

The walls are decorated in Aloft style with words relating to Strasbourg. I really liked the airy feeling in a fairly small space through the mirrors and large windows.

There were plenty of charging possibilities. On one side of the bed there is one USB-A port via the telephone and two free European and one US outlet (not sure if it is 110 or 220 V). On the other side of the bed there are two USB-A outlets on the wall, two additional ones through the alarm clock, but no free electrical outlets. The alarm clock also offers wireless charging, which worked well with my iPhone.

The shower stall had both a hand-held shower head and a rain shower from above. The pressure was good. I liked that they did not have single-use shampoo and conditioner (from n-ki Organic Bathline).

The basin is in the main room, but has enough separation to not be in the middle of things. I liked the design.

As per a flyer hanging in the elevator room cleaning is prvided every three days automatically to minimize environmental damage. Otherwise you must request it at the front desk.

The hotel is in a nice location, about a 10 minute walk to the city center. In the lobby the hotel also offers discounted e-scooter rentals. I found the city to be very walkable so I did not even consider this as an option.

Immediately next to the hotel there are some other food and beverage options, including something Chinese (Bol'Inn) and something that appeared to be a trendy bar, perhaps even a night club. There was also a burger place and brasserie.

If you are coming by train from Germany going to the Gare Strasbourg might not be the quickest option. Google maps will likely suggest you get off one stop earlier and then take the tram for two stops.

Dining

We did not have a proper meal here beyond breakfast. We did have drinks in their WXYZ bar on the outdoor terrace. I really enjoyed sitting in one of the rocking chairs in the summer weather while sipping at a cold beer. The service through the multi-lingual staff was efficient and friendly.

Breakfast is fine. The buffet scrambled eggs were runny so I asked the attentive staff to cook some scrambled dry. This was not an issue at all. The selection of items was a bit eclectic, but tasty. Fruit salad from the can seems to be a recurring theme in French hotels. So it was also here.

Breakfast is served 6:30-10:30 daily and extends until 11:00 on weekends. It costs 16 eur per guest. Platinum members pay 15.

Amenities

The lobby area has different areas for relaxing and interacting including the bar and a pool/Billards table.

There is also a room for guests to do their own laundry, which would be great for longer stays.

Gym

The gym is small but very well lit. The equipment was all in good condition.

Aloft Strasbourg Etoile

Location

The location of the hotel is good. It's not smack in the old town city center but close enough (15min walk more or less) or you could take the tram there as well. It's near a shopping mall and a UGC cinecité with plenty of options should you be bored one day.

Coming by train from Germany, it was easier to get off the train at Krimmeri-Meinau and take the 2 stop tram ride. Rather than going all the way to the main station and backtrack on a longer tram ride.

Check In

It was weirdly slow, 2 desks for check-in but apparently, mine had IT issues... so it took a bit of time to get all done. I wasn't in a hurry but I was getting bored :) Friendly staff though.

Room

They only have 2 room categories I believe. I booked a standard room, ended up in room 717, on the second last floor, corner room so it was bright and airy. Nice view of the cathedral and old town on one side and on a neighbor building and expressway on the other side.

It's big enough for 1 or a couple. No closet but that's kind of a "standard" nowadays in these limited service hotels. Bathroom was big but it's open so depending on who you're staying with, it might lack some privacy.

The shower was good, nice hot water, good pressure. You can't control the water pressure. it's just on and off. There is a normal shower hose and a "rain shower".

Plenty of plugs and USB outlets throughout the room and around the bed so that was perfect.

Coffee machine (didn't use it), a mini fridge with a free bottle of water and a small corner couch.

The TV is nice and big but oddly placed. At least it was easily movable and it can swivel so you can watch properly from the bed.

One annoying thing were the blinds.... you had to either close all or open all. And it's just one level of blinds, meaning you could just close to sleep. There was no middle level blinds that you could use during the day, where you could still get some day light in, without having the neighbours seeing you walking around half naked in your room :) small detail but it made me very self conscious while walking aroud the room on one side, facing the apartment building next door.

Dining

I took the breakfast option as a Plat. It's good enough with some fruits, cold cuts, bacon scrambled eggs, sausage and tomatoes, cereals, bread and some pain au chocolat and croissant. Not sure I would pay for it though.

IMG-9934.jpg

Service

Currently they only do housekeeping every 3 nights of stay. You can of course request a daily service, you just have to ask them. I'm fine with every 3 nights. It's their post Covid and environmental friendly measure...

Overall

Honestly it was a good stay, I paid around 110EUR per night I think, which was reasonable enough. i'd stay there again if I ever visited Strasbourg again. The main bar area on the ground floor can get loud and crowded on weekends though and the sound goes up through the elevator shaft but you can't hear anything from the room.

Gym

There's a small gym available on the first floor, with enough equipment to keep you pumped.

Spent a couple nights at Aloft Strasbourg recently, same room (717) as enelym1978 above. Wanted to write a quick review to compare the Aloft to Maison Rouge, where we had a great stay a couple years ago.

The Aloft room is modern-functional, the view very pleasant, but there are serious concerns with privacy. There are only electric blackout blinds, which work great at night. But during the day, you have to lower them all the way if you want any privacy in your room -- the windows aren't tinted in any way, so anyone can look in and watch you in your bed or bathroom. Note that we were on the 7th (of 8) floors, so this problem is likely worse on lower floors, and indeed some rooms in the back of the building appear to face nearby office buildings. Here's a picture of our bathroom taken from a couple hundred ft away:

Unless you lower the blinds during the day, anyone can watch you shaving, getting out of the shower, or whatever else you do in your room. The hotel desperately needs to add some curtains you can use for privacy during daytime.

We liked the location, which is a couple stops further on trams A or D from the Central Station (closest stop: Etoile Bourse). It's an easy walk into town, and the immeciate neighborhood has a mall with giant grocery store. If you visit by car, the Aloft is far easier to reach than Maison Rouge.

Breakfast was mediocre in selection and quality -- obviously Maison Rouge has a huge edge here, but it was weak even compared to other European Alofts.

All told, for €90 (vs €250 at Maison Rouge), the Aloft is not a poor choice, and I can imagine staying here again.
