Overall this hotel isn't yet on par with other St. Regis or five star hotels. I would have been disappointed if I was staying here and paying full cash price (it was $800+). I stayed one night stay (I booked two rooms for that single night though) at the end of the July 4th weekend. If you're staying here in the next couple months, I would temper expectations for now and then be pleasantly surprised if your stay goes better than expected.

Cons -- it felt like the hotel staff were still learning how to operate cohesively. There were some inconveniences (we never saw or heard from the butler, the room key was deactivated at 12noon even though we were granted late checkout, they messed up the hotel bill, etc.). As I expected, my SNA wasn't granted because the hotel was sold out (I'm not blaming this on the hotel but I wanted to mention it because many frequent travelers wonder how likely an SNA is going to be approved at a given hotel). The standard room type I had booked wasn't actually ready for check-in around 3pm when we arrived (listed check-in time is 3pm). I received a call from them around 5pm stating I could finally check into the room. This wasn't a huge deal for me as we were doing other things around the city, but they didn't seem very apologetic or offer any drinks/compensation for not having the standard room ready by the listed check-in time. Again, the cash rate was ~$800 for the night I was staying so if I had paid that much cash for a standard room on a one night stay and it wasn't ready during check-in then I'd probably be a bit unhappy.

Pros -- the rooms are very well appointed. The food and drinks were all excellent. I didn't initially receive the $30 per person breakfast credit for Marriott Elite members, but when I called the hotel afterwards they gladly updated the bill. The location and views from the rooftop bar were great.

Great hotel. Seems like they’ve ironed out a lot of the grievances that have been previously highlighted here.

Redeemed for 50k points here for a layover in Chicago. SNA to a junior suite cleared about a week out. As a Platinum member, received a $60 breakfast credit, which was more than enough to cover coffee and three dishes. The gym is also very well appointed and was much appreciated compared to going out in the cold for a run.

I would generally concur.
just did a one night family stay-cation over the long weekend— we had a great time and are thinking about doing it again later this year.
All staff we interacted with were fantastic and accommodating.
they gave my kids pink lemonade in champagne flutes, which led to some hilarious attempts at two handed drinking (just happy we didn’t break them)— I was offered sparkling wine.
SNA cleared to a large suite which was beautiful, clean and ample.
pool with the kids was a great activity, pool water was perhaps slightly cold, but it was also -10 out so, probably fine most other times.
breakfast at Miru was delicious and we received a $60 credit for the bill for titanium status.
my only con is they still haven’t set up a way to tip via credit card on the room bill and they didn’t have an atm on site. I ended up walking to the Swiss hotel a block away to their atm, but sounded like they were working on it.

Any data points on whether the restaurants here will do the thing where you earn points equivalent to a stay if you just dine in the restaurant? (I’m not sure if that even is still a thing under Bonvoy, I used to do it back in the SPG days sometimes?) And whether a restaurant bill paid by Bonvoy Amex card would earn the extra points?

Tre Dita, the Italian restaurant here, is perhaps the hottest table in Chicago these days so definitely of interest to locals.

No and no. They are a third party.

Is the St Regis Chicago worth $800 to $1000 USD? Yeah, no. Is it a good hotel for Chicago? Sure. I enjoyed my time here and was comfortable. If price was no consideration, this would be my first choice in Chicago (I think the bed is better than the Park Hyatt). Here are my impressions:

Pros:
  • Bed was perfect - plush covers, medium-plush mattress with good support, plush pillows
  • Shower pressure from the wand was decently good
  • Full suite of connectivity options on the TV - Chromecast and native apps
  • Nice river views, even from the lowly 6th floor (rooms only go up to 9 here)
  • Late checkout offered proactively - no issue with 4 PM
  • Welcome gift of three tasty and fresh macarons
  • Staff was generally friendly and asked for feedback at check-out
  • Breakfast was a straight $60 credit applied at checkout - two entrees and a latte plus reasonable US tip came out to around $63 - the food was very tasty - good pancakes, great hashbrowns, good scrambled eggs - they said IRD was an option, as well

Cons:
  • They would only upgrade me to a Grand Deluxe room and not to a suite - I asked at check-in and said they had already allocated all “complimentary” upgrades, which makes me think they hold some back - didn’t feel like arguing
  • Exterior windows slightly dirty
  • Latte at breakfast wasn’t very strong and also wasn’t very hot

I would come back.

Thanks for the review and photos. Nice upgrade to a room with a great view! As an elevator enthusiast, were you enthusiastic about the hotel's unique elevators? I thought they were kind of neat.

Destination dispatch systems are relatively common in the US, but I do enjoy them. I couldn't really figure out why two of the elevators passed the guest floors, though - do they really need 5 cabs to go to the restaurant?

I suppose they have quite a few non-staying visitors who only come to eat at the restaurants, so no need to stop at the guest floors, but that's just a guess.

Can anyone confirm if you can charge your bill from Tre Dita to the room? I’m assuming you can at Miru with the $60 breakfast credit, but I was worried with it being run by a third party. I have a statement credit promo on my Amex for Bonvoy and want to make sure it will count

mtxing Jun 17, 2024 4:56 pm

Just checked out today and I have to say, I wasn't too impressed.

A disclaimer though, I found a night for only 44k points, and I had a 40k point cert from hitting titanium last year burning a hole in my account, so I redeemed it here. I was here for only one night (needed a place to crash before my flight) and redeemed a very cheap rate.

The physical design of the hotel is very beautiful. It helps that dark blue is my favorite color but I enjoyed the look of the rooms a lot. The bed was very comfortable, the room was well equipped, etc.

The service however just felt a little less polished than I'd expect. Admittedly I've only stayed in one other St Regis, in Osaka, and I don't expect nor want American service standards to be the same as Japanese standards, but I guess I expected a bit more.

At checkin, my room wasn't ready so they offered to store my bags. No big deal; I was there around 2 o'clock. The person checking me in certainly wasn't rude, but he rattled off a comically long list of which amenities were available and what times they were in such a monotonous manner that I got scared I should be taking notes. But okay, maybe he was new and a bit nervous about getting it wrong. I thank him, turn to leave, and then he calls out to me asking if I have any guests. I turn back, say no, and then he proceeds to tell me that if I have any guests coming over, he can upgrade me to a bigger room for $100. I am Titanium Elite. Of course not all open inventory is available for free upgrades with Bonvoy, but to be stopped on my way out of the building to have a hotel actively try to sell me an upgrade that a casual reading of my benefits might ostensibly imply should be free definitely left a bit of an awkward taste in my mouth. And to use a legitimate question about number of guests as a segue into the pitch gave off used car salesman vibes in the worst possible way.

The room was beautiful but had terrible noise isolation. I could hear every car going by outside all night. And there was an unvacuumed crumb on the ground by the bed.

<Edit: And I forgot to mention but the bulk shampoo dispenser was almost out. It was doing the thing where it would sputter and barely put out a single drop with each pump.>

In Osaka, after I checked in, my butler proactively came to my room to introduce themselves, show me around the room, and offer me a welcome beverage. There was also a snack of some cookies on a plate in the room already. Here, none of that happened. No gift in the room, no butler came to introduce themselves. Not that I needed the help unpacking for a one night stay, but I thought the human touch in Osaka was nice. The lack of welcome gift in the room was a bit odd to me, especially as even the Four Points I stayed in the night before had a mint on the table for me.

The breakfast credit was $60 at the restaurant upstairs. I got the Japanese breakfast and some juice which after tip came out to exactly $60. There's a 3% service surcharge that the menu says you can ask to have removed. I tried it and yeah, they totally will if you ask.

The restaurant first sat me down next to a wall with half a dozen flies and mosquitoes buzzing around it. When I pointed it out to my waiter, he kindly moved me closer to the middle of the restaurant. That was appreciated, but maybe a five star hotel restaurant shouldn't have a corner of the room infested with flies?

Oh and the fire alarm went off at 5am. After everyone evacuated outside, the front desk waved us all right back in with an unceremonious "sorry, false alarm."

The stay did end on a positive note, luckily. I requested 4pm late checkout and it was honored fully, with my keycard working until 4 and no one knocking to bother me until I left on time. Also the lady working the front desk when I checked out was extremely friendly. Frankly that was the type of service attitude I expected across the stay; having it be the last interaction I had with the hotel definitely left me feeling better about the experience than I otherwise would've.

So, in conclusion, this was by far the best hotel I've ever spent 44k Bonvoy points for a night in, but that is not the bar a luxury hotel needs to clear. Looking at the cash rates they're trying to charge people, for the experience I had, I honestly don't think the standard of service is quite up to the five star level I'd have expected from a St. Regis.

I stayed here recently as well and have a lot of the same thoughts as the previous poster—great physical property, service is friendly but unpolished and not what I expected, although it was my first stay at a StR property.

We arrived pretty early and I didn’t expect a room to be ready and it wasn’t. No biggie, the agents were very friendly and we got the room ready notification around 2pm so it was still a decently early check in. When we got back to the hotel we were given our keys and shown to the elevator. I expected a butler to stop by at some point but we never received any sort of complimentary bubbly like others have mentioned.

We did have a NUA clear to a Caroline Astor suite and we LOVED the room. I really like the aesthetic of the rooms personally and the bathroom was massive.

Our luggage took almost 20 minutes to get to the room so we were just waiting awkwardly before it arrived. A few minutes after that we heard a knock and an amenity with some sweets was hastily dropped off. Nice touch but the execution was lacking. I had some shirts that were wrinked and mentioned it over the chat hoping they would offer to send a butler but they just sent up an iron and ironing board as there wasn’t one in the room. I realize now I could have called the butler services on the phone (I did this for a coffee service the next morning) but there was absolutely zero interaction with the butler or anyone from there on arrival day.

Around 5pm we hear another knock and it’s housekeeping asking if we wanted turndown service. I say we were leaving for dinner at 7 and she indicated that it was a then or never sort of deal. As we were in the process of getting ready for the evening we declined. Not sure what the point of offering turndown ONLY at 5pm is, as I feel like most people are getting ready at that time.

We dined at both of the restaurants and service and food was high quality at both. Appreciate the hotel reaching out over email prior to the stay with any requests, they were able to make us a reservation at Tre Dita which is a hard one to get in the city.

The rest of the stay was better, a butler did bring us the coffee service and ice greeted us by name in the lobby when we returned in the afternoon (we had very brief interactions with her otherwise). We made great use of the pool, sundeck, and sauna/locker room amenities. The last frustration was just maybe an hour before checkout, housekeeping did try to enter the room. We didn’t hear them knock as there is a long hallway into the suite and when the DND light is lit, the doorbell is silenced. Luckily we had the security lock on…

Overall we still had a great time with this stay and a lot of our “problems” really are first world problems. I just feel like the service was a bit disorganized for the caliber of hotel and reputation of the St. Regis brand. If you can get. A good rate, use points, or money is not an object, it’s definitely a great place to stay in Chicago. I just feel like this service would be considered excellent at a 4 star property but falls short of being true luxury.

This place charges more—substantially more—than the Peninsula, Langham, and Four Seasons. Unreal that the service is anything short of flawless. That’s the Bonvoy difference, I guess.

I stayed here a few nights ago for one night using my Bonvoy Card One Night award and came away sort of underwhelmed. The property was gorgeous and the service was decent. We were upgraded to a larger, nicer room, which was nice, but it wasn't a suite. The offered the $60 breakfast credit unprompted which was another pro and actually asked me if I wanted late check out instead of the other way around.

Other than that, I don't see the value in what they're charging for this, which was going for $800+/night if you paid outright for it. It's a nice facility, but unless you're staying in the $4000/night Astor suite, it's not much different at its core than a Westin or even the Sheraton across the river for a garden variety room. I sort of feel like the hotel is secondary to the rest of the massive building which is high dollar condos.

It's good, but not great, especially for what they're charging.
