Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

MARRIOT UK: +44 20 7012 7312

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

This happened to me going from an OC8 when the agent mistakenly ordered me an NC6 and my balance went to -30k points. I do not know if there is a limit on how much you can go negative but the system used to allow it. Works like a points advance.
I'm not sure if the above statement is correct. When we say TP certificate, we refer to the Travel Package (miles and hotel certificate). You'll need to fully pay the points to get the TPs. I think you may refer to upgrading the TP hotel certificates, not the TP itself....

It depends on what agent you talked to. Once I spoke with a Marriott Elite service rep. She said she would give my 5,000 MR points to get my 7-night NC6 cancelled. I said no. It carries point value of 300,000 MRs and original value of 165,000 MRs.….

Right, don't think one can "points advance" the travel pacakge (Air+Hotels). Otherwise, the 8/18 cut off last year would be even crazier.

I called again, and they attached the certificate successfully this time. It has now disappeared from my certificates available. My reservation now says "this reservation has an e-certificate" total points for stay: 165,000. A NC 6 is "worth" 165,000 points. So does that mean the certificate is all that is required, or that I need to pay with the certificate and an additional 165,000 points? Specifically my reservation looks like this:Room Total Summary

165,000
Points
  • Redemption with Points Upgrade
  • 1 room(s) for 7 nights
  • Wednesday, XXXXXX, 2019
    • 121000 points + Free Night
  • Thursday, XXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Friday,XXXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Saturday, XXXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Sunday, XXXXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Monday, XXXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Tuesday, XXXXXX, 2019
    • 171,000 points
  • Total points rate
    165,000
  • Estimated government taxes and fees
    Included
  • Total for stay in hotel's currency
Taxes and fees + 165,000 points
Your booking has a OC9 attached to a NC6 property, so the package value is 165,000 points. Also each daily rate requires 121,000 points per day!! You'll need to deliver additional 847,000 Marriott points about 14 days prior to your stay. Get your points ready please.

If it says that I don't see how they could possibly charge an additional 121,000 per night. Otherwise it would be included in the total stated, right? I'm nervous because every time I call the CSRs seem to have no idea and all tell you something different, so there's no way to call and be confident in the answer. But I also don't want my reservation to be cancelled a few days before because I don't have the additional points required in my account.
Susan, your booking says very clearly that you need the upgrade certificates and it seems you can't produce the 121,000 points per day. I do not think you get any hope. Can't book something like St. Regis Bora Bora with OC9 certificate alone. Wish all of us best luck though.

The simple but unfortunate truth with Marriott these days is that you can't rely on anything its agent conveys, or its website displays. Specially when it comes to TPs, make sure you've dotted the i's and crossed the t's, to your own full satisfaction.

Yes, that is right, I am referring to upgrading the hotel cert from a previously purchased package. No one is ordering new TP's at the new rates.

Thank you, Red Sun. I haven't heard of upgrade certificates. How do you purchase those? What's weird is that I needed two rooms (I have six kids), and I booked another of the exact rooms for the same dates on points only for 50,000 points per night. I have no idea why this one is asking for such a crazy number of points. I originally booked it with cash, and it was $400 per night, so not exactly St. Regis Bora Bora rates. I read you needed to do a points advance reservation to attach a certificate, and when I converted it it came up with the 171,000 points per night.

I believe either you or the agent booked you its Presidential Suite or so since you have a large family. So the very high demand for points. It is a mistake. You should just book two rooms for 4 people each.

it is very frustrating not to get authoritative responses (or even helpful ones) from Marriott.

A suggestion: Back when they were separate, Starwood had a "Starwood Lurker" named William Sanders, who was extremely helpful with information and advice. I was never clear whether he was an "official" spokesman or an unofficial one, but his information was the real McCoy so he was obviously coordinating his answers with Starwood.

He "came over" with the merger and is posting on other sites with the handle " Marriott Bonvoy Lurker" and he has posted on FlyerTalk with that handle as recently as yesterday. May I suggest you direct your questions to him and see if he can get this sorted out. He was a wonderful and valuable resource as Starwood Lurker, so he may be here as well.

Just converted a P950 to QP99 this morning. Thanks for the help everyone. Followed the guideline on wiki and guided the process. The agent didn't have experience with it, but asked her supervisor to do it. Got an email confirmation about the cancel and new certificate with new expiration. However, I don't see the points deduction yet.

One thing to keep in mind that, Marriott is a huge hospitality company. It DOES NOT want to get any legal aspects of serving the customer. This is why Marriott will never make any announcement about technical aspects of the reward program, booking and TP etc. It gives some guideline and leave the actual practice to its staff. I think this is a prudent corporate decision.

When I look at the reservation is does not say points advance, but I see that part where 105,000 points looks like points due. But I think 105,000 is the value of the package.
When attaching a free night certificate, the reservation still shows the # of points for the stay, it does not zero out .

11/27/2018
Rewards
Partial Package - 5 Nights Category 6
11/27/2018, Ordered -105,000 Rewards
-105,000 Points

William is the "Messenger" for Marriott long before the final merger took place. Ever since Mar or Apr 2018, he was fielding questions regarding the merger in that capacity. In fact he stressed several times, ANYTHING he posted had to be reviewed and approved, by the "Merger Team".

You can count his posts as official as they can get. The sad part is, even so you still cannot take it as gospel because Marriott would change its mind and rescind the positions previously conveyed to the members, via William the messenger.

SPG also had the SPG Champion one could contact on certain issues regarding stays not posting nights count not correct etc but they cannot help with TP. I doubt this team would even still exist now when SPG site is completely killed.

OT
if you pay close attention, when you book SPG property on Marriott site (the only way really), the URL CHANGES. For that matter, this may PRECLUDE the current 10% portal rebate because it excludes SPG site, and I am sure everyone knows the cash back portals rely on tracking in order to make sure your purchase meets the criteria - so they get paid, and give you some back as the cash back.
