Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

I have a reservation at Domes of Elounda in May with OC9 cert attached.
  1. Is it possible to detach the cert and receive NC6 cert?
  2. If I do this, does the original cost of my Domes reservation stick - 165,000 points?

Based on the wiki, and info here it appears there still isn't a category 7 version of the 5 night certificate...is that true?

I purchased a category 1-5 and a category 6 legacy package - has anyone had success in getting their points back for the legacy category 6?

Called the US number. I tried to convert an OC9 cert to NC7. OC was attached to a reservation at an NC7 hotel (was NC6).

I asked to detach reservation and convert to NC7 and attach to new reservation at same hotel. I mentioned that I expected this to cost 150K points since the hotel went up in category. She said no problem and put me on hold for ten minutes.

She told me it was all set and the certificate was converted. I asked her to attach it to the new reservation and she said it's only good for cat 6. I requested to pay the difference and she said she could only cancel and rebook the hotel at the new rate. 200K difference. I said that wouldn't work and she opened a case. No response yet.

I think she screwed me over by converting it to an NC6 without adjusting it to NC7 first (and deducting the points in the process).

Any recommendations?

I am leaning towards agreeing with you here. Convert it back?

OC6 transfer to NC5

I have a old marriott CAT6 package, but I want to transfer to old CAT 7 package, that means a new CAT 5 package, according to the old chart, I only need to add 30000 points, but when I call them, they said I need add 105000 points to get the new cat5 package. Anyone know the code I can transfer?

Have you read the wiki of this thread?

Since you already know the terminology of OC and NC, you should be able to understand the Wiki very easily.

The corresponding codes from OC to NC as well as the OC partial values are all in the wiki.
If you are accessing this site with mobile device, you need to set it to desktop mode in order to see the wiki which is at the top of the thread.

All the info you need is in the wiki. You should also read back 10 pages or so to understand the process and the better approach to accomplish your goal. It is not a cut and dry 123 but requires some finese and skills.

Read back enough to learn from others approaches with success and failure would go a long way to help yourself to get what you want. There is no substitute to the reading.

I am going to try and explain my recent experience extending the deadline for a cert and changing hotels within the same category. It got very convoluted but ultimately worked in my favor.

Before the changeover, I paid 270k points for an old Cat 5 certificate. I tethered that package to an old Cat 5 hotel reservation. That hotel then became a Cat 6 hotel post changeover. I made the reservation for one year ahead hoping I would be able to extend until Christmas 2019 and possibly change hotels.

Last week, when Christmas week availability came open, I called and asked to change both my dates and my hotel to another new cat 6 hotel (a Ritz). No problem I was initially told. This began about 3 hours of calls with about 4 different people and got totally off the rails. At one point they charged me 300k more points for another certificate to make the reservation (thus 2 certificates for one reservation). Recognizing their error, they refunded me back 330k points but didn't tether my certificate to the reservation (despite saying they would) and the website said I still owed 300k points for the reservation (7 nights at 50k per night, one night free). Finally I got a very helpful supervisor who could not understand how it got so botched up and fixed the problem and gave me 25k points for my troubles. Also, they never corrected their giving me back 30k more points than they deducted for the second certificate. At no point in the conversations did anyone mention the fact that I was effectively extending the original certificate beyond 1 year; they just got screwed up and focused on what category hotel I was booking into (the Ritz apparently shows both cat 6 and 7 status depending on where you look).

So, after 3 hours of time, I was able to change the hotel, extend the certificate, and ended up with 55k extra points for my troubles, 30k of which was their mistake. I was not going to risk further conversations to fix their mistake.

My feeling is that this is as YMMV as it can get but it may be instructive to others.

Is that possible? I probably should've asked her to undo what she did.

Can anyone advise what the cost of my Domes reservation should be once the cert is detached? (It currently displays as 165,000, but I think that might just be the value of the attached cert)

I've confirmed with Marriott that the cert can be detached and would turn into NC6 with a new expiry date (1 year from the date I detach it).

An award booking at Domes of Elounda currently costs 60K pts/night, so a 7 night stay would cost 360K pts. The cash out value of the cert does not affect the value of the booking.

Welcome to FT!

The wiki in this thread is a great resource for all the codes you need. There is also an example of a best practice way to convert your cert from OC to NC. Have a read, and you should be all set.

Call the UK number?

I would have quoted the NC7 package order code from the wiki and made sure the agent only ordered that package. Once they convert you to an NC package it becomes exponentially harder to get them to cancel an existing NC package so you have your work cut out for you. I would try to get it converted before the case response comes back. If the response comes back as not allowed but you already got it converted to an NC7 it won't matter. If the response comes back as not allowed and you have not converted yet - well your chances just went down even further.

So I have a reservation with NC5 attached under my wife's name and account. To my understanding, I can only book attach the certificate under the owner's account, is that right? I also found no option to change the reward number or add one more name under the reservation online.

However, she doesn't have status with Marriott while I'm platinum premier. Is it possible for us to receive the platinum premier benefits?
.

Thank you in advance!

The general rule is benefits are based upon the name on the reservation. I have never had a problem adding an additional name to a reservation. When my wife was planning to arrive before me, many hotels would not give her a key unless her name was on the reservation. No hotel wants to give a key to someone's psychotic ex, just because the last names match.

My suggestion would be to add your name to the reservation and include in the notes that you are a Platinum Premier. If necessary, follow up before arrival. Although your wife is not entitled to your benefits, some hotels may be willing to make an exception.

You knew really well that OC9 -> NC6. So you baited the Marriott CSR to make the mistake?
