I went for work and my company provided me with a driver/security person that accompanied me everywhere I went. The guyanese people I met were all SUPER friendly and fantastic people, but we did get into a couple of situations with pretty aggressive obviously high junkies looking for handouts. Everyone says its safe to walk around in the daytime as long as you stay in the right areas, although a lot of it looked the same to me. I travel a lot for work and pleasure and as fantastic as most of the people I met were I will not return to Guyana unless my work requires it again. That said my company has a few people living/working down there now and they have not had an issue yet, although they do live in a guarded compound.

I just completed a fairly nice one-night stay here. Most notably, I arrived before 9:00 AM and was delighted to learn that I had been upgraded to an "ocean" view suite on the top floor, and it was ready. I was even welcomed to go to the lounge and have breakfast.
The rooms are holding up nicely. This feels very similar to a fairly nice Marriott you'd encounter in the USA. For somewhere like Georgetown, I'd say that's a good thing.
Gym was a decent size, well maintained, always cold bottles of water. More than I expected, honestly. Pool is also nice, and very popular.
As for the lounge, breakfast spread is a good mix of local and American. Lots of self serve drinks and good coffee. Service is friendly and professional. What some may like, and others may find disappointing is the evening service. They call it "dinner," and that's what it is. They put out a nice dinner buffet, that skews local, which is great. The food is high quality and choices are plentiful, but there are no alcoholic drinks. None. Not even for purchase. Personally, I don't view 5;30 PM as dinner time, so I had a little snack and left early. I found this disappointing as comparable hotels in the region offer a more traditional happy hour set-up.
Service was great across the board. The staff is friendly, well trained, and professional. All in all, this is a gem in a place like Guyana. I really don't think there's any other place to consider in Georgetown at the moment.
As for "safety" in Georgetown. I walked all over the city during the day time. I probably hoofed it nearly 12km. I kept to busy streets, and never felt unsafe at all. I particularly liked the Alberttown neighborhood. In the evening, I hung out on the Seawall, which is literally just behind the hotel. I would describe it as one very big lime (in Caribbean parlance). I came back to the hotel at 11;00 PM on Saturday night, and again I felt safe. I'm sure the hotel would probably advise against everything I've said here, but that was my experience.
