I have a (free) Hilton AMEX and a Marriott Visa. If it gets to the point where I'm not staying in a hotel for a long time, and I have a lot of points to protect, I'll just make sure I charge something to the cards at least once every six months.
That should be enough to keep them alive indefinitely.

I had an account with less than 2000 points in it, no credit card, no activity, no stays since maybe 1995(?). When I started up again at Marriott this year, they looked it up and the points were still there.

Now that you mention it, that happened to me too. When I bought a Marriott timeshare in 1996 the salesman asked if I had a Marriott Rewards card. I told him I remember having one many years back - perhaps mid 70's. He checked - found 50,000+ points sitting there and reactivated it for me with all the old points plus all the new ones for the purchase, and the old number. I don't know if that would have happened if I didn't buy the timeshare, but was pleased the points were reactivated - and also surprised I had that many. Times may have changed by now, however.

nah, they don't expire 'em over time, they'll just DEvalue 'em down to worthless...better customer sat that way

Officially, they can close your account after a period of extended inaactivity. In practice, anecdotally, you can usually get the account reactivated with the points intact with a phone call.
In my own case, the dormant account hadn't been used in about a decade, and got activated with balance (a couple of thousand points) still in it.

I'll say the same. The official T&C say they can expire your points after two years of inactivity.
But in practice, they don't take the points away.

Just to add to the other posters, I'm not even sure if/when they will deactivate an account. My wife had an account with some points in it and no activity for at least 5 years and probably closer to 10 years. I was able to create an online account for her and see the points without talking to anyone. Her account was still active as far as Marriott was concerned.
