Positive data point here! I secure messaged AMEX about the $65 annual fee that showed up on my last statement and asked to have it waived. Here was the response:

Because you are a valued Cardmember. Therefore, as a gesture of respect to your relationship with American Express and our commitment for impeccable customer service, I have credited your Card account in the amount of $65.00.

This credit will appear on an upcoming statement.

:)

What was your annual spend last year?

But without the AMEX, the only way to reset the clock is via a stay? It would need to be an actual stay, not simply a hotel restaurant charge that posts points?

I'd always thought that alone would keep man account active but even I am thrown by the quoted language:

You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as (a) your Membership has not been cancelled (by you or us), and (b) you have had an Eligible Stay at a Participating Property within the previous 12 months, or (c) you have earned Starpoints by using a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card during the previous 12 months. Starpoints resulting from transfers or earnings from Program affiliates do not count toward active status.
Because I also thought that even redeeming for a Free Night Award extended expiration.

I've had an SPG Amex so long now, I may have lost track!

As confirmed by William multiple times, a restaurant charge will keep your account active even though it's not listed in the T&C. See posts #95 and #101 above.

You must be thinking of a different program.

A restaurant charge from a participating restaurant shows up as a stay transaction because it originates as being from a participating property, so it will keep an SPG account active.

Thanks everyone!

No, this is not a follow up to my old thread, that one was about my husband's card and it is taken care of (converted that one to a no fee Amex blue).
I havent been using it in a few months (probably since march, when I got my Cap1 Venture), but before that we used it almost exclusively.. I will call either today or tomorrow and talk to them and see what happens. I want to keep the card, just maybe ask them to reduce the fee this time.

I sent in secure message asking to reduce or waive the fee. Today I got an answer from them, saying that they will credit my account $35 to partially offset the fee. Which is fine with me, $30 for an annual fee is ok with me for this card. I'll keep it a little longer now.;)

i got nothing when I called in, maybe i will try secure message with my 2nd card when that one comes up

I secured messaged and got a message about a 65 credit also, they answer was a little bit different than the post above, but still good enough. I spend about 16-18k yearly on the card.

If at first you don't succeed...

Called and got "thanks for your business." Hung up, sent sm, and got 3000.

Is there a distinction with their offers of statement credits/points for personal vs business?

4,000 or $40 credit offered this week

Based on your spending with the card.

Got $50 on both cards. A friend just got $50 as well. Spending varies hugely among cards. For previous 12 months, they are 12K, 30K and 100K respectively - all got $50. The myth of depending on your spending is just myth. 2 were requested via SMs, 1 was via phone. Oh, the 30K spend card only got 2000 SPG points on 1st request. Asked to match $50 or up to 5K SPG pts, was issued $50 as well and got to keep the 2K pts.

Me, too, three times.
Than a mystery 2000 points showed up in my account, How were the points shown on your statement? The 2000 might be for the additional cardholder spend. If that is the case, I'll call and ask for something for retention.
