I just sent a SM asking for a fee waiver. If I cancel the card, do I have 30 days to use my points or was it a year? Also, if i later get the Business card, can I use the same account as my Personal one?

Your account will stay active for a year. You can refresh your account with a stay or a restaurant charge of $10 or more.

Isn't this just a followup to your other thread?

Had a secure message back-and-forth three times with the agent, who denied me flat-out. I think I might try calling.

SPG points expiring? Just visit a restaurant.

Citi was pretty generous in waving my AA Card's fee after I make 5 purchases on the card. Im wodering if SPG does something close to that....

Not a problem. You don't have to spend a hotel night, you just need activity on your account. That could include spending at least $10 on a meal (or maybe just drinks... not sure) at a hotel in the Starwood program.

Here's a good link:

(And if you don't need your Starwood points since you rarely travel, I'm willing to take them off your hands for you!)

Good luck!

Some states allow for points on alcohol, and some don't.

Thanks everyone!

No, this is not a follow up to my old thread, that one was about my husband's card and it is taken care of (converted that one to a no fee Amex blue).
I havent been using it in a few months (probably since march, when I got my Cap1 Venture), but before that we used it almost exclusively.. I will call either today or tomorrow and talk to them and see what happens. I want to keep the card, just maybe ask them to reduce the fee this time.

I think I'll keep my hard earned Starwood points for my next trip to Germany!:D

Positive data point here! I secure messaged AMEX about the $65 annual fee that showed up on my last statement and asked to have it waived. Here was the response:

Because you are a valued Cardmember. Therefore, as a gesture of respect to your relationship with American Express and our commitment for impeccable customer service, I have credited your Card account in the amount of $65.00.

This credit will appear on an upcoming statement.

:)

"You can refresh your account with a stay or a restaurant charge of $10 or more"

It must be $10 or more? Less than $10, such as $1 wouldnt keep it active?

It has to be $10 before taxes are applied or the hotel has no obligation to credit your account for being a diner only.

Wondering which Subject and Category you used for the message?

Is that true? I was looking in the T&Cs and saw this:

You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as (a) your Membership has not been cancelled (by you or us), and (b) you have had an Eligible Stay at a Participating Property within the previous 12 months, or (c) you have earned Starpoints by using a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card during the previous 12 months. Starpoints resulting from transfers or earnings from Program affiliates do not count toward active status.
(b) seems to indicate a stay, not simply any activity...?

There is an "or" between (b) and (c). Provided the account activity referenced by jerry305 is on your SPG AMEX, you would not have to make any stays if there was activity on the credit card account the previous 12 months.

You're talking about different accounts... You earn SPG points based upon spend on your AMEX account (personal or business). When your statement closes they issue the appropriate number of points to your SPG account. Unless they find fraud, your points are secure until used or expired. There is no mandate to maintain your AMEX account to keep your points (just don't close your AMEX account before the points post).

But without the AMEX, the only way to reset the clock is via a stay? It would need to be an actual stay, not simply a hotel restaurant charge that posts points?
