Although I agree that the StR hard product may, indeed, may be more modern luxurious, I find that the décor at SGS works just fine for me. To me, luxury in terms of hard product conjures up images of the capitals of old Europe, acres of veined marble, highly polished brass everywhere, all in a building that's maintained spotlessly clean. That's SGS. Of course, everyone's opinion is different.
Doesn't the bar at the SGS usually have some local girls on offer? Haven't been myself, but it's what I've heard.

(I'm sure nothing quite comes close to the basically in-house brother at the Grand Hyatt though… trashiest chain hotel bar I've been in ever, bar none)

Did SGS staff not bow and scrape sufficiently for you? That seems to be what some of our StR lovers on this forum really like.
Have you been to the GH Erawan bar (Spasso) at night? Blasting awful music so loud that you can hear it in the lobby above, and when I went there to meet a friend for a beer… the crowd other than us was a handful of caucasian visitors, and a couple dozen working girls looking for customers. Very strange vibe for an upscale hotel bar. I wouldn't really be comfortable meeting anyone for a drink here that wasn't a working girl.

It seems I've been pre-upgraded 3 days in advance from a basic Deluxe King room (Luxury Privileges rate) to a Caroline Astor Suite. Hoping this sticks!

They are prone to pre-upgrade to CA and then dg to something lesser prior to arrival. Happened to me in February, and other reports as well. One of the reasons I don't think the service is so great here as others may suggest (though I still like the property).

Good luck!

Go for StR, have dinner at the Waldorf Astoria down the road, have a cocktail at the Anantara next door, do some shopping at Gaysorn or Central or Paragon. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Contacted them and offered me CA for 9000 THB++ (or 300 USD) top up from my category 5 free night award.
Thoughts? given that the rack cash rate is around 780 USD per night for the date i chose.

Thanks.

Note: Just realized they "upgraded" me thru the app although it looks likely to be true. (See next post)

9,000 THB sounds about right, but you could barter a little with them and try to get it closer to 7,000 THB. My advice would be to do it at check in (when the room is available/empty), and you never know, you might get a complimentary upgrade anyway (it’s low season). I personally wouldn’t pay 9,000 or 7,000 THB, as I would rather pocket the cash and spend it in Bangkok, but then again I have experienced the CA suite many times, so it depends how much you want to stay in a CA suite! There are two types of CA suites - 24 and 25 series. The 24 series is what most people want / is the one in all the pictures and promos, with the bedroom overlooking the sports club. I have actually come to prefer the 25 series, which I find quieter, and the bedroom overlook the pool, meaning the living room overlooks the sports club. You might be able to get the 25 series for a little less. I also really like the St Regis suites (which are huge and only higher floors), which again you might get for less, and have fantastic views.

P.s. I’m not sure, but isn’t your app snap (that you posted) showing that the room has already been upgraded to a CA suite? I think it is. If so, just take your chances at check-in and see what they have.

Heya,
1. Think its the 24 series as it says Golf Course view during the email exchange.
2. i'll consider the app photo i posted as a red herring for now as based on previous reports, the posters did not get those rooms upon check in.
3. Am also not too optimistic in getting upgraded for free into the CA given that mine an entry level room. (usually Met Suite). While SNA redemptions are either Grand Deluxe or Met Suite..
4. Appreciate the pointers on the prices and i'll consider again what the hotel comes back with. At the moment it still stands at 9000 THB and have asked if the price comes down if i apply one SNA.

My app was showing a pre-upgrade to a CA suite last week, and that is indeed the room I received (complimentary upgrade from base category).

Mine also said Golf Course view, and I had the 25 series.

Hi folks, just got back from a one night award stay from StR BKK.
A recap of the story was that this was an award stay (75 night gift) so i thought i didn't mind spending "a little" to secure a confirmable upgrade.
Offer was +$USD300 for the CA Suite which i decided to take a risk and speak to the FDA on the check in day.
Based on the several data points in this thread, a met suite upgrade is quite likely while some lucky ones secured the CA as a complimentary upgrade.

2 weeks before my check in i saw that the room assigned to me was a CA suite but the day before my checked in, it "dropped" to deluxe to which i pinged the hotel thru the chat and the best they could do was a 1 category upgrade to "Grand Deluxe"
Arrived at the hotel, same story from the FDA who said they couldn't move me past Grand Deluxe as their room inventory were all snapped up. Apparently all their 1 bed-room suites were "taken" and only the 2 bedders were available. She asked if i wanted to consider paying more to get that room which i declined. So that's the story of my check in experience. Perhaps I need to stay more to build up "reputation points" too.

With that out of the way here is a short review of my stay for those considering this property.
Check-In
- Upon arrival, the concierge took our bags and escorted us to the front desk located on the 12th floor. Iced lemon grass and cold towels were provided which provided great relief from the searing heat.
- FDA explained the elite benefits options (Breakfast, 1000pts, StR Collar Pin), "Wine appreciation" at 5pm to 10pm which she gave me 2 vouchers for alcoholic drinks by the bar.

Grand Deluxe Room
- Sport / Golf Club view. Its nice the first time you see it after which you just tired of it since you see the same view while at the bar or the pool.
- Its west facing so expect your room to be warmer during the late afternoon.
- The room is quite big which has a king size bed, working desk and a 3 seater sofa.
- Toilet is a semi open concept as you can move the wall partitions which gives an illusion of a larger room.Standing shower and bath tub (no view though)

Food & Amenities
- Champagne sabering at 5pm daily. If you never seen how they decapitate a champagne with a sword or you if like free champagne, don't miss this.
- Live Jazz music from 8pm to 10.30pm at the bar. Good to pair this with the free drink vouchers provided. Finger food (local chips, nuts, deep fried fishcakes) are provided.
- Swimming Pool is on the 14th floor. Not very big hence it was forgettable. I suggest to instead head over to the in-house Spa for a better complementary experience.
- Breakfast at "VIU" was good. They provided a menu which you could order from. Tom-yum omelette was great if you are a fan of spicy food.
- Butler service was ok and only used them to order drinks. Their local TWG teas seems to be their in-house signature that you should try.

Location
- On level 2, there is a link bridge that connects you to the BTS skytrain which takes you to Siam interchange which offer lots of shopping / food options
- Central World Mall is also walkable (5-10mins) from the hotel.

Check-Out
- My flight was scheduled at 10pm and the hotel allowed me to stay till around 6pm.
- Spoke to a different FDA on their upgrade policy again whom he shared the usual SPG Marriott policy they will do their best to get the best available room for their elite guests. He also shared that max they can upgrade are to the metro suites. CA and above are speciality suites which has to be paid for but they do offer very attractive rates for elite guests. He goes back to tell me that my Grand Deluxe was actually better than the metro suite due to the facing and at times metro suite "can be too dark" {his own words, not sure what it meant}

Conclusion.
Overall it was still a great stay and I was also quite happy i did not shell out additional 300 USD for the upgrade.
Elite guest recognition is a mixed for me. Unlike the posts i have read here, I did not feel any 'additional' effort by the hotel. (e.g. like a welcome note from the GM)
No sure if i would return since I might try SGS and/Or W for my next trip.
