We are currently on a one week stay here. I booked the hotel through SPG points and availed of the fifth night free. This books into the basic Villa, which is up in the mountain, with no sea view. The hotel emailed me straight after my booking and offered me to upgrade to a nicer villa with a better view. As a Platinum member I would have expected some upgrade, but I was told on the phone that this can not be given this time and if I wanted a bigger room I would have to pay the fee. I obliged and paid roughly 230 USD daily to upgrade to a Villa with direct beach access (Beachfront Haven). The website shows pictures of the Villa and claims the size is in excess of 250 Sqm.
When we arrived it was much to our surprise that the villa had no views, was close to the beach, but by no means directly at it and the actual villa is 80 sqm, but they count all the garden and pool space on top. So basically its a scam! The Villa has two areas. One area with a bed and a seating area with a tv. Then a small hallway with the minibar and coffee machine (great Lavazza machine, the best thing about the entire hotel!) and a large bathroom with inside and outside shower and a large free standing bath tub. The outside area consists of a good size pool that allows for a few strokes and a small garden area with loung chairs, a dining table and a large patio bed. All Villas in the hotel are exactly the same, just the Wow,s are apparently a little bit bigger. We met another couple who told us they got upgraded to a Villa the same category as we had from the base category. My advice is therefore not to book and pay for the Upgrade. Not worth it as you anyway get the same room everywhere and the distance to the sea is the same walk more or less.
The resort as such has two areas, the reception with a Bar and a restaurant. The same complex also hosts the Gym and the Spa and the pool. All the Villas are either below this complex, close to the (public) beach or above in the hill. Its pretty easy to walk around and you dont really need a buggy as everything is close. But of course you can take one if you are lazy. The second complex is a beach bar and grill and a Japanese restaurant. There you also find the beach beds and lounge chairs. The beach as such is public and really nothing to write home about. The water has a dirty feel to it, lots of algen and the sand is full of sharp corals. Due to lots of water activity, speed boas and jet skis passing by its actually dangerous to swim outside of a marked area. I thought the beach had a stressy feel to it due to all the water activity. And as I said, not any tropical feel to it. Compared to for example Santiburi, this beach is third class.
And the beach kind of reflects the entire property. Its all a good idea, but it does not come together. The restaurants were very empty every night of our stay, so was the Bar outside of afternoons, when lots of tourists would swarm the bar to get a photo (its kind of a landmark, we have no ides why as they really dont know how to mix cocktails).
In a W Hotel I expect lively dining experiences and a lively atmosphere. None of this exists here. Its quiet, there s no music or action anywhere. Friends were staying at the Four Seasons and we went there one night. Compared to the W that hotel was lively. And my god, the Thai restaurant there was amazing. My friends had actually checked with their concierge and he explicitly advised not to go the the W as expensive for what you get. And thats true. The outlets are very pricy for Samui and there is very limited selection. The food feels like packaged food. We dined at the Japanese restaurant where Thai style they served all our five courses at the same time (and of course four dishes were cold very quickly). And the Maki was American style with lots of Mayonaise. The prawn dish was very much Thai and had no resemblance with anything Japanese. The grill at the beach closes at 5pm so basically only serves lunch. The quality of the food there is great and we enjoyed the daily fish a lot. Very fresh and great taste. The main restaurant is very basic. Also the breakfast happens here and the room service is produced. The breakfast selection is vast, but the quality was not at the level of a W Hotel. I wish they would serve less options, but well done. The food just tastes like from a cantine. Room service has a limited selection, basic quality, every day the same dish (grilled chicken) looked different. At least one of the dining options should be good. None at this property.
For me its about personal touch. After five days they still had no idea what we liked and they did not care either. Thats what basically a hotel in Thailand has to deliver. Especially if its as a small one as this (at mid level occupancy). The W does not.
the pool is a great venue with a beautiful view surrounded by gardens. Really nicely done. The Gym and Spa are directly below the pool and the Gym is well equipped. The Spa is also nice. With typical high quality as you would expect in Thailand.
So in short - if you are looking for an exiting W style holiday you will be disappointed. This hotel feels more like a want to be. It does not have any action or pro activity. There is no happening atmospere anywhere and the entire feel of the place drags you down. It does not stimulate to have conversations with other guests. Staff were great as you expect in Asia, very willing, but clearly not trained well and they dont come across motivated or empowered.
There are much better options in Samui.

Good to read. I'm there in April for three nights. I'm happy to find out that it's not worth upgrading. I hate getting the hard upsell from hotels - Ws seem to be the worst for this - I even had it when I checked in at the W Bali which was really unclassy of them. My favourite W is in Guangzhou where I've 60% success of a great suite upgrade and no attempt at upselling me anything.
Also good to know that it's not one of those party Ws with a pool bar that's like Potato Head in Bali full of ghastly screeching drunks.
Did you get any noticeable Platinum benefits? Breakfast I guess. Any booze in the evening? Samui hotels are notoriously stingy and the most I've got there has been two drinks at the bar per room each day.

Agreed. When it first opened we planned a 10 night stay at USD$900++ per night in an Ocean View Escape. The studio style of the rooms also doesn't work for us. There was torrential rain for 48 hours so we checked out early. The product certainly doesn't justify the price.
When we return we will choose the Vana Belle or the FS. As almost always, Ws are style over substance.

The recent review had me a little worried but I was really glad I didn't cancel.
MumbaiDan was right about the atmosphere of the place, it definitely doesn't have the vibe of other Ws but as I was hoping for R&R that was actually a bonus for me personally. If you are looking for the same sort of vibe as, say, the W Bali then look elsewhere. To me this felt more like the Ritz Carlton Bali in its sleepiness although the service isn't nearly the same level as the Ritz.
This is entirely down to the demographic of the guest this property attracts, overwhelmingly Chinese families. Clearly they won't be taking the kids or grandparents partying and tanning by the pool or on the beach isn't a past time traditionally associated with Chinese families. I did check with the staff and the fact it was CNY didn't really change things, apparently the majority of guests at the property year round are Chinese families.
The specifics of my stay: I was booked for a 5 nights stay with points into a Jungle Oasis. Check in is at 3pm and we had to wait until then to get the keys to the room due to occupancy levels the night before. We waited at the lobby bar and to be fair they were very prompt with keys at 3pm.
The room itself was amazing. Without any fanfare - they literally didn't mention anything - we were upgraded to a tropical oasis villa for the duration of the stay. The villa and the private pool itself felt much more spacious than the pool villas at the W Bali. It was well maintained and the grounds staff kept the garden area pretty clean although perhaps not as fastidiously as the staff in Bali.
From what I can see, the villa is identical to the beach access havens which don't have a sea view and I definitely wouldn't pay to upgrade to given the proximity (30m) of all the villas to the beach. As mentioned, the sand on the beach isn't silky smooth but that's fine if you know in advance. The facilities on the beach were OK but not amazing. The food was fine but the service lacked a little, this ain't no Ritz and it showed in the lack in attention to detail that the staff showed. Not what you expect for a $1000k per night experience and really one of only a couple of let downs of the stay.
One great touch for plat premier guests was a sunset boat trip on Friday evenings. We were invited to take the hotel motorboat out into the bay to grab some sunset photos, enjoy complimentary drinks and get dropped off at the local 'fishermans village'. There wasn't a fisherman in sight at the village but there were plenty of F&B outlets and a night market.
I used my plat benefit for breakfast which was a good value given the price of breakfast and length of stay. This wasn't proactively offered at check in but they were happy to allow me to do so. The breakfast would be the other let down in terms of the quality and quantity of the spread. The egg station was pretty basic, no crab/lobster meat of the St Regis Bali, the fruits were pretty limited and the quality of pretty much everything was so-so, not particularly great on any count. Breakfast was practically the only time we saw any other guests and boy was it hectic inside. We used the balcony each day but going in to get our food (there was zero table service other than tea & coffee) it was pretty full on with kids screaming, yelling and running around all over the place. The balcony was much more chilled so we escaped the worst of it.
The location of the hotel is a little removed from everything so you'll need to think about transportation. I rented a car as I had read that the taxi drivers on Samui are charging ridiculous rates. The one time we did use a taxi (Grab, which is the equivalent of Uber for south east Asia) it cost us around $15 USD to drive less than 2 miles. I'm familiar with driving in Thailand so renting a car was a really easy was for us to get around and explore the island. We made frequent use of free parking at the Central Festival shopping mall which is located in the middle of the Chaweng area.
I've stayed at the Vana Belle in a grand ocean view pool suite and I think, for the money, I'd go back to the W again if I was to choose between the two.

Does anyone know if the hotel will charge the exorbitant 5,000 THB / night "Extra Person Fee" if booking a rate that includes breakfast as a Platinum Elite? I would assume breakfast for all persons in the room would be 'covered' between the rate and Platinum status?

Can you expand on this? W currently offering a great package for dates I'm looking at (much better deal than VB), but the reports of no views, mediocre breakfast, and unswimmable beach have me hesitating.

We used SNAs to upgrade to an Ocean View Escape and the views were spectacular, the breakfast was great, although it's true I've had better breakfasts in a few other hotels. As a Platinum or above you will get two free drinks at Woobar every evening and the beach bar: Sip, does 2 for 1 every evening between 16:30 and 18:30. The service here was great and I would not hesitate to return.
The beach though, is rough coral sand but I still spent a few afternoons/evenings there.

Escape Offer save 10% with benefits value of THB 25,000, includes breakfast daily, dinner daily, cocktails at Woobar, choice of 60 min massage at Away Spa, prepay in full, non-refundable, no changes, roundtrip airport transportation, see Rate details
This is a really good deal considering that the non-package rates here are typically over 15k THB per night.
Interestingly, they've dropped the points rate to 80k per night during this period. So only 320k for a five night stay.
