Even better, when you transfer to an airline for a $600 flight!

That's debatable. Free hotel is free. Free flight may have additional scam charges lowering the value of the reward.

+1

Plus Starwood points are harder to come by than airline miles at-least in Canada. Very easy to rack up Aeroplan points... SPG not so much.

Excellent point. Hotel points in Canada are tough to acquire. Aeroplan not so much.

My application was approve when I applied the card oversea. I called them and answer a few questions to verify. They said the card will be mail to my home address, and they gave me 15k limit.

Not sure if I want to churn this card, because the bonus will probably drop to 10k after a few months.

Since there is no benefit to use a referral to sign up for this card, then you might as well sign up through GCR and get a $30 cash rebate. It's also 20,000 welcome points there now (and to be clear, also no $0 FYF).

Ha ha, people who want to refer would argue otherwise (10K referral bonus for referrer vs. $30 for applicant)

Now, now Jerry, you know what I mean.

It makes no sense for a new applicant to use a stranger's referral for this signup. What could the referring stranger's argument be?

"Hey Newbie, you don't know me, but give up $30 and use my referral instead to get this card. You won't get any extra welcome points, but you'll make me really happy."

By all means, use a stranger's referral if you want to spread good karma, but the last time I checked, $30 is equivalent to a good steak at The Keg!

In my situation, I have the SPG card, I can refer to my wife, she gets 20K points and I get 10K. That’s better than $30 from GCR.

Definitely better. But, your wife is is not a stranger to you, right? No need to answer.
