Stop & Shop and Giant supermarkets gas rewards points on gift card purchases(2018-24)

THIS IS A NEW THREAD FOR 2018. The previous thread is here.
***If you buy gift cards outside promotions, you will earn ZERO points.***

Accepted tender: Cash, credit, and debit. Also available are mobile/contactless payment (Apple Pay, etc.) and mobile loyalty (card barcode via app).

Summary
Stop & Shop (S&S), Giant Food Stores (Giant PA), and Giant Food (Giant MD) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for a discount on the price paid per gallon on fuel sales at Shell and S&S/Giant fuel stations. $100* spend = 100 pts = 10c/gal discount. The particular rules vary between the three brands, and within Giant PA, the rules vary by location. Refer to the bottom of this wiki post for more information or links to official info from each brand.

You can earn gas points from both regular grocery shopping and gift card purchases (promotion only).

The grocery reward points (Go Rewards or Flexible Reward) can be transferred to either gas points (Fuel Rewards) or grocery points. The conversion rate is 100 points = $0.10/gallon or 100 points = $1 saving in grocery.

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional Information

A loyalty card is required to take advantage of gas rewards. They look like the above image and can be obtained either online (links at end of wiki) or in-person (at the customer service counter).

The cards currently on promotion are listed in the current weekly circular and usually change every week. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank on the back.

S&S and Giant (DC, DE, MD, and VA) allow you to redeem up to 1500 points ($1.50/gal) per fuel purchase, and points expire 30 days after the qualifying purchase. With Giant PA, there is no limit to the number of points redeemed at one time.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program.

Your ID may be required when buying gift cards. Your name and other info may also be recorded for purchases over a discretionary dollar value. Whether you're buying a $100 card or a $5k stack, your experience will vary.

You can view your account online using the link at the bottom of the wiki.

It's best to purchase gift cards at the customer service counter, but reports state that a single $500 gift card can be paid for at any register without an issue. Purchases over $1k will require manager authorisation with a physical key, which may slow down the queue. You can go to the Solution Center to save time and make things easier for everyone.

Giant Eagle and Giant Food are different chains with different ownership, and this thread is not relevant to the former.

If you have more points in your account than are redeemed for a fuel purchase, then the remaining points will stay in your account until their respective expiration date(s). For example, if you have 2500 points and debit the 1500 ($1.50/gal) maximum, you will have 1000 points left. Similar behavior if gas is ever below $1.50/gal before discount.

If you don't receive eligible points with your purchase due to system or human error, you can have them retroactively added by customer service (in-store or by phone). Have your receipt and a copy of the advert. It can take up to 24 hours for keyed points to appear in your account.

Louisiana
Maine
Massachusetts
Mississippi
Montana (very limited stations displayed)
New Hampshire
New York
North Carolina

Digital coupons for $10 off grocery purchase when buying $50 in Happy GCs are available in the app already, even though it was advertised in tomorrow's flyer. Can get points and food if you buy today.

The problem with that is someone could still use your phone # without the PIN. They will get the S&S Rewards but not the extra Fuel Rewards. I emailed them to complain about this and never got a response.

So you used 3 different S&S accounts?

There was no limit, it said some limit on the receipt but this was never hard coded.

I live in MA, where I can just enter my phone number at a Shell station and watch the price per gallon reduced by $1.50 before I pump. The internet seems to indicate that things are different in New Jersey. Can someone with recent experience confirm?

First, the S&S website (https://stopandshop.com/frequently-a...qs/gas-rewards) seems to indicate that you need the physical card rather than entering a phone number (N.B: I don't have a Fuel Rewards account, just S&S). Any way around that?

I also read an article (admittedly a couple years old) saying that the discount wouldn't appear at the pump, only on the receipt. If that's true, how do you know the gas points were applied correctly? Shell tends to be 10-15 cents more expensive near my family's house, so I wouldn't buy there if I wasn't sure of getting the $1.50 off.

Here I can use either Shell FR card, or enter my ALT ID at the pump. The discount shows right away before I pump. I think FR card is much safer. But even with ALT ID (gas attendant enters it), I never get anyone stealing my points. I can set a PIN or change the phone number if points get stolen.

The FAQ may be alluding to NJ stations being full-service and assuming people are too lazy to get out of their car. I personally always get out to enter the number myself when I don't have my card. I've always had it where the pump shows the price you are paying. There have been occasional outages where the points don't come off (see posts from a few days ago) and that's how I know not to get more than I need, if that happens.

On newer pumps, it'll be just the same as in MA, press the button for Stop&Shop/FR, enter Alt-Id, etc.

On some older pumps, you have to press 3 or 7 or something to be able to enter the number, but those are few and far between.

Best thing for you to do would be to sign up for an FR account, that way you can get an extra 5 cent discount.

Why don't you just enter the ALT ID yourself? The attendant always lets me do so (I just did it last night).

Here, it is against the law to enter the ALT yourself. Full service.

the FS doesnt apply to entering your alt ID or swiping CC.. only for lifting the pump and pumping the gas. Ive done it many times there. A rogue attendant may make up a story but its not against the law.

Safer and faster than swipping the FR card? I guess no one can remember the long FR code on the card.

At the two Shell stations I go to most frequently, more often than not when entering my Alt-ID they ask me something like "You got it?" and don't mind if I pump myself. Or if I have them fill a can first, I'll often get asked to hold the nozzle while they help someone else and I go about filling the rest myself.

Fines are extremely rare. Quickest I could dig up was an article on NJ.com from 2017. 2 citations were issued in 2013 and 0 in both 2014 and 2015. It's also apparently the station that gets the fine, so if they are willing to let me, I'll do it to get it done quickly.

Just FYI. The gas station attendent said that entering ALT ID at the pump would be disabled over the next a couple of weeks. We'll need to swipe the FR card, or link the credit card to the FR account and use that credit card.

I think they may want to stop the ALT ID sharing, or stop the theft of the ALT ID.
