It wasn't just those, the memo included a lot of "discontinued" gift cards due to old issue or old artwork. If you look at the card and/or carrier, on the top or bottom right of the back is a 4 digit number. That's a MMYY date format for the batch when the card was produced. The discontinued cards were either over 2-3 years old, and Sears (because Safeway didn't want to carry a card for a retailer that won't be around for much longer)

You are better informed than the store manager were at the two locations I went to. Still need to return to one of them in order to receive a refund for the charge for but not activated cards. Plan to mention that the cards seem to have been discontinued; hopefully, it will ring a bell.

Just as a head's up, two of my $500 variable Meta VGCs purchased this week at SoCal Von's have been tampered with. No outward damage to packaging, but the glue was not in the right place on both cards and the mag stripes would not work on either card. Customer Service was good as usual with shipping out replacement cards. I've only experienced (attempted) gc fraud with the fixed denom cards, never the variables, so this is a little unsettling.

Happened to me in Austin. They thiefs drained the card and I'm dealing with the dispute process with bhn right now. They sent me a replacement card for $0.27, the amount left on the card....

I’ve been earning 1000 points each time for the “Canoe” and “Balloons” flavor VGCs, and has been hitting it hard until I got two fraudulent cards within a couple days. I’m going to rest on Vons for a little while.

If you don't have Safeway gas stations closeby, is there a limit (cents/dollars off per gallon) on redeeming the rewards at Chevron gas stations?

It makes sense that now these fraudsters are going after the next card with weak security. Buyer beware. Open the card packages before you purchase and take a look at the glue/mag stripe, if it looks tampered with, show the store clerks/manager (not that it'll make much difference...)
