The 2018 thread is here.

THIS IS A WIKI FOR AND OLD THREAD AND IS NO LONGER BEING UPDATED.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All WM registers allow 4 debit swipes per transaction, but YMMV per store and cashier. Refer to cards as debit.

-Visas issued by MetaBank work great. Pin is last 4 digits
-MC issued by US bank work good, but you need to change payment type to debit before they enter the amount in the register. Swipe and hit "Cancel" or "Change Payment" to select "Debit" on the screen and have them enter amount and then enter the pin. Pin in packaging.
-Any Vanilla product affiliated with InComm or ITC Financial Services will not work for swipes > $49.99.

NO variety or design of VISA or MC Gebit's will ever auto-drain at Walmart.

The amount of each swipe needs to be entered by the cashier. Ask to "split the payment by $$$". The Gebit must have current balance of that amount or more otherwise slip with Error 51 will print out. Warning: (YMMV) It appears (my experience on 3 occasions during prepaid card load and buying MO in 2 different WMs) that after the debit card was charged no cash could be credited back to the card. Cashier should issue cash back. Keep the slip and contact manager if in doubt. Remember date, time and register if no slip.

You cannot successfully swipe more than 4 cards in a single transaction. If the cashier screws up and enters $50.00 instead of $500.00 (thus making it impossible for 4 swipes to complete the transaction), the transaction will need to be canceled. The funds should return to your cards right away but may take 24 hours, so note the time and person helping you.

MO fee is usually 70 cents each. Subtract from your total or pay in cash.

Start slow and buy one MO to see how it works. Your store or cashier may work different and have rules that other store do not have.

Very few Kate's can sell money orders anymore.

Stores do compare last 4 digits. Not always, but it does happen.

someone I know got booted from a store for this. Do not get involved in something like this unless you are prepared to accept the consequences or have a good explanation if/when confronted by LEO

LEO? There's nothing LEO can do. The store may not let you buy any more MOs ever again, but they can't call LEO.

whether the wm csr can call or cannot call LEO is a side issue.

logically, one would think they can't be making up random rules when it comes to buying MO, but we have found that some of the overzealous ones still do. and the wise ones among us will stay quiet, politely thank them, and walk away, and hope tomorrow will be a new day.

like i say, if you have a good explanation, then you have nothing to feel apprehensive abt

that's one I'd like to see. CSR: Sir, this costumer paid for the money orders he bought. Arrest him! LEO: wat?

I think Tahsir's experience at a WM while buying MOs ought to be shared for those who have not read it.

There's always going to be some wannabe gestapo officers. You're better off worrying about those when you're speeding or crossing the border.

Yes, i think that article is a perfect example of the idiots that are destroying everything. Please read it.

AND THEN: THINK ABOUT IT if you don't understand my comment above.

Exactly, this guy is a complete and utter tool -- you can bet the policy in that store changed immediately after that little ordeal.

I question if what he's saying is actually true though, if it is he's a dick.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

But, on a different note, I’ve been encountering no issues liquidating at my local WM, but then again, I only do 2 or 4 swipes at a time, which takes the same amount of time as a MoneyGram.

ETA: none of the MOs from my local WMs show the “gift certificate wording,” so perhaps it’s just a regional issue.

regardless of what we all think/say, the article shared proves that there are overzealous store personnel that can, and will, call the cops related to MS activities. One female blogger shared her experience with the Asset Protection guy questioning her for doing $10K in B/P and MOs at her WM where she thought the staff were all aboard with what she's doing.

the chances it may happen to anyone reading this may be less but no one can say it won't ever happen to them (regardless of the volume they're doing). best to be prepared at all times and stay focused on what you're doing.

Buried in the middle of the Tashir post --

... the original officer came back to us to let us know that we were free to go and that he legally has nothing to hold us on. He added that the IRS agent he spoke to was “around the corner” and driving over to the Walmart to speak to us but we could leave if we wanted. This kind of made no sense to me but I chalked it off as him implying that I should stay. In addition, I actually had some questions for the IRS agent about taxes on Manufactured Spending so I decided to stay. It was probably the worst decision I made that night.

Any lawyer will tell you that when LEO says you are free to go, you should leave immediately .. no if's, and's, but's. There's nothing that this supposed IRS agent could possibly say that would be of any value. It was simply naive bordering on stupid to have stayed beyond this point.

Ha Ha, after making that decision, he deserved everything he got. What good could have possibly came from waiting to talk to the IRS guy.

ughh, while gettng MO at WM this morning, noticed ripped up gebit wrapping littering the ground.
Some halfwit is presumably opening GC's at the registrar and not even having the courtesy to take away his trash. No wonder this store has become a lot tighter with MO's
