If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

Good run of 33,000 points this week. As I use about 40 gallons a week I'll sell the rest of my "fillups" for $20 each and actually turn a profit. Almost hit the 20k spend on the new BA Chase card this round. Hopefully they do another in the next few weeks like in July! western NOVA is an untouched place to MS

Had to use my 'backup' S&S store to find some gift cards yesterday... went to my normal one on the way home from work Tues and the racks had a good amount, I'd say about 50% full so bought a few. Went back on Thurs and it was cleaned out.

I was shocked that there was so much stock left at the two stores I frequent. Hopefully now that there are so many different variable load designs that the stock will continue to be strong.

I would guess that now that Redbird is no longer available to easily unload these GCs, a lot of people have dropped out of the game. I waited in line to get a mo at Wal*Mart for the first time yesterday to unload and can understand why others don't want to be bothered with all that time. Both S&S stores I went to yesterday had at least 100 vgc's on the racks.

ALWAYS check your receipts and count your GCs!

ALWAYS check your receipts and count your Visa/MC cards to ensure what you paid for, you received in hand! Check your online CC stmts to match receipts!

I had a Giant in PA charge me 2 times ($505 ea) for cards that I did not have in my possession, and in one case, did NOT have the receipt! Could have been $1010 lost if I did not double-check!

I was alerted to the possible issue due to two cards NOT activating, and cashier swapped out cards to get me new ones, BUT I got charged even though no activation! The issue got complicated since the cashier required me to buy GCs in 505.95 increments/transaction since she said the register would not allow more even with mgr override key?

Issue fixed next day, after one hour of manager sorting through transactions, and seeing one missing receipt in a batch of 3 receipts that I had. Each receipt is sequentially numbered by register, and the manager traced it because I had 2 receipts, skipping an in-between receipt number. Also, she saw the receipt for the second card that clearly said "not activated."

(The cashier apparently discarded that receipt since the card did not activate, and thought I would not need it. Initially the manager reviewed video, since I purchased at the service desk, and thought the cashier put ALL the cards and receipts in bags, but she did not. I had to insist the mgr check again because the video did not show it all).

Perhaps some folks have been caught in transition, but since you can easily load these cards to a Bluebird account at a Walmart cash register, it's hard for me to see how this would be "too much work." Honsetly, a lot of the manufactured spending I see discussed (and some of which I do!) seems like a PITA, but this one seems VERY worth it. Giant makes buying the cards very easy, and then you can easily get out of the Walmart in less than 5 minutes. Not sure why you'd mess with money orders when their is Bluebird. Certainly a "casual" MS participant never should.

Anyone able to use this at shells in FL? I know the answer already but thought I would ask. I commute from NY(weekend) to FL (M-F) that's the only reason I ask. Most of the shells here are associated with Circle K.

Does any one have a solution for the $.10 issue when Shell doesn't connect to the Giant system?

More specifically, is there a way to tell how much rebate you are getting before you get charged the points?

In my experience, you don't get charged the points until you actually pump gas into your car. I have had a few incidents where I get so far into the transaction that the pump displays the lower price, I insert my credit card, I remove the nozzle, but I am not able to actually pump anything due to some sort of malfunction. I have never been charged the points in those incidents. (I have even gotten a $0 receipt for these failed transactions.)

Ok so I just cancel if I don't see the price change the way I want. I assumed at the moment I see the price change that it was taking the points. That's helpful thanks.

What on earth is wrong with you people? The CC company would ask why you just didn't hit cancel and then go 'buy' your gas somewhere else where they will obviously give it to you for free. This is a known issue with mid Atlantic Giants and Shell. Even on their website Q&A. Don't like it; vote with your wallet.
