If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

Not sure where this 24 hr wait rumor started but it is not true. Points are available if they are on your receipt.
Thanks this is good to know.

On the Stop & Shop website's faq, they do say that the points will be available
within 24 hours. Not to be interpreted as having to wait 24 hours...

I don't believe that the points are always available immediately though. I've gone to two S&S within 15 minutes and even though the points printed on the first receipt, they didn't appear on the second.

One Giant in central PA has a cash only policy (not register enforced).

Another yanked all the Visa, MC and Amex GCs off the racks -- I saw a box of the cards behind the customer service counter last night.

The last one barely had any on the racks.

FWIW -- I had no trouble buying any VGCs during the 3X promotion.

If you want to know if you have your points, you can scan (or key in) your s&s number. It will ask if you want to use your points. You can say "no" and drive away. I did this last time around when I had 4500 points. Swiped for my $2.20 off, then swiped again to see if my remaining points were there or gone. They were indeed there. I said no and went home. Used them a couple days later.

Funny thing with this visit, not knowing if I would lose points, I first went to the cashier and asked if they needed to do anything to save remaining points. They said no. As I was putting gas in the car, the guy came out and told me that I could put 35 gallons into anything I wanted....multiple cars, gas cans, whatever. So I opened the back and filled my gas cans. 35 gallons FTW! Of course, YMMV.

Don't go to Fresh Pond Shell in Cambridge MA

I stopped by Fresh Pond Shell (260 Lexington Ave at Fresh Pond Parkway, Cambridge MA) yesterday, as there were signs of Stop & Shop Gas Rewards. It's a full service gas station. I gave my Stop & Shop card and my Amex BC card to the person helping add gas. He pretended to use the Stop & Shop card and then my credit card. However there was no Gas Rewards discount on my receipt. The guy said that the discount would be deposited to my Stop & Shop card tomorrow. We know it was a lie. He refused to call his manager (the guy was the only person in the station) to solve this issue.
I will file a dispute with Amex when the transaction is settled.
I will go to non full-service station (as I had done) in the future and avoid this Fresh Pond Shell.

During the last promo I bought gift cards at one Giant then drove to another and filled up. I scanned my card and didn't notice until I was done filling up my car that it charged me for the whole thing. I went to the attendant and they said they had a problem with their computers and the points would post the next day. They refunded my money no problem, after I showed them the receipt that I had from the other Giant.

EDIT: Oh sorry I read your post too fast, didn't realize you were talking about another station. Still, the points seem to be taking a day to post.

Anyone have any success using points at an out-of-state station that has the same chain as your home state? Taking a road trip from MA (Stop & Shop) to PA this weekend and hoping to fill up at a Shell in NJ that shows up on the S&S website's "participating gas station" finder. Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the quick answer. Guess I'll just have to fill up beforehand and try to add as little as possible to my tank on the way back!

I believe TJ is wrong. I'm from MA too and have successfully filled up at S&S participating Shell station in CT on the way to NY.

I wish Giant cards worked at S&S. We're driving to Maine from PA and won't be able to fill up for free even though we have enough points for 6 fill ups here at Giant.

Guess there's only one way to find out! Will update the thread on whether I'm successful or not.
