If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

Current S&S promo: none

Current Giant (PA) promo: 2X points on AMEX ends 12/10

Current Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promo: none

Past S&S promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):

10/16/15 - 10/22/15 2x for VGC purchase

Past Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):

12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

s&s gas promo

If I have extra points that I won't use, I give my card to my neighbor and he can fill up cheap.

I'm going to give my neighbor a tank of gas. He has a snowblower and will keep my walk and driveway clean all winter. Seems like a good trade.

If you don't have someone that can use a free tank of gas, find someone pulling into the station that looks like they could use it and give a stranger an early Christmas gift. Karma points are far more valuable than airline miles in my opinion. Shouldn't let free gas go to waste.

Thanks - The cards I bought were issued by MetaBank (the only issuer of *Visa* GCs I know of that Giant sells) and one had the plain gray design on pkg / card; the other had the purple color card with the bouquet of flowers on the front of the pkg. Both were variable load $20-500 denom.

What design did your card pkg have?

I've done this a number of times. It makes me feel good and hopefully helps out a stranger.

bought a few blue bday cakes yesterday in RI. went at the busiest time of the week (before football kickoff) because i knew they wouldn't have the time to scrutinize.

already liquidated via WM MOs, and now i get to (almost) fill up the truck for under $1/gal.

as an aside, there is a substantial difference between shell gas and what's on tap at the S&S pumps. i only used shell 89 and v-power in my boat this summer, and the fuel filter looked brand new after a full season of use - dramatically different than when i trailered and filled up at bj's and S&S.

it's not a big deal if you're just filling up your 4cyl daily driver, but if you'll be storing the gas for any amount of time or using it in a special application, opt for shell fuels. there's also a trick floating out there to get 5% cashback at shell on any cashback bonus discover card for the next couple of months.

S&S

my brand new Sonata has an angled gas filler cap that would be impossible to fill with a pump from a barrel. It will keep falling out, wasting precious gas. I have to hold it tightly at the gas station. And if you filled it up at your home, the fumes would be all over the place. hey watch out for the smoking delivery man!!

Check your owner's manual to see if your car has a special funnel to make pouring gas in easier. My MIL's car was impossible to try to fill. I saw a little decal on the fuel filler door that showed a book and a funnel... so I checked her manual and the funnel was behind a little door in trim panel of the rear compartment of the vehicle.

I watched two monkeys argue with that fuel can and vehicle for 20 minutes or so, and then came over to look... I'm like, gee, guys... it's not even printed, it's pictures, like on the wall of a cave,

I saw this made Dansdeals today. I guess don't try to buy any gift cards anywhere near Lakewood, NJ (the epicenter of Dan's readership).

I was thinking of going in Thursday (last day of the sale in my town) for another couple cards, to extend my month. I'm not optimistic there will be any left, though.

BTW, having done this deal at both Giant PA and Giant MD, I think I like the Giant PA deal better. You only get 25 gallons, but you can make it entirely free; instead of 35 gallons at $2.20 off (which at least is getting closer to free now that gas is below $3.00). The 35 gallon limit encourages me to "caravan" my family's cars to the station at the same time, which is a PITA. And it seems more fun in PA when the pump price is "zero." I also like how you get more time (until the end of the next month) to use the points.

I don't like using a gas can to refill my tank. I'm getting better at it, but it still seems like I always spill a little (I have an old can). It just doesn't seem like a terribly good idea.

Hi, tried the 2X coupon at three different Giant stores and it was rejected thrice. 6x (2x coupon x 3x promo) would have been nice, huh?

Dan's deals, huh? Maybe that announcement generated a LOT of new interest in this deal, as I went to three Giants in Chesco, Pa., and they had zero VGCs, except a few $25 denoms ... the word is out! Burning up gas driving to find points for gas!

Were you rejected by the cashier or was it rejected via the POS?
