My CVS in Manhattan stopped accepting credit card for OneVanilla cards. Said it was a policy change started this week.

I had a patient cashier that I walked through this with. He is cool and was letting me buy them. But then yesterday he brought out the memo. I explained the difference between OneVanilla and MyVanilla to him (even showing the package) and he apologized for the misunderstanding. Most cashiers/managers won't even let you get that far. They KNOW the rules and won't listen to reason.

Not "most", it's really YMMV. That stands for Your Manager May Vary. :p

"They KNOW the rules and won't listen to reason".

It's over, there are no more heroes left......

Yes, people would have changed their buying habits :-)

While i've never seen anyone buy (or even pickup/visit the gift card rack) a VR when I was there (a busy CVS), there surely are a lot of VR cards on the rack and now even next to the cash register at one of my walkable CVS stores...

When I went in yesterday, I couldn't find any OV cards, but found a VGC (variable for US$4.95 free / silver coloured). I figured I'd try my luck, and this morning I was able to add it to my BB account at a Wal-Mart register!

The only difference is 'Gift card' printed on VGC, that for some at Walmart is a problem!

Last night I went to pick up some OV. There are 2 versions. One version has the "only valid in the United states" and one that is blank. You can see it through the clear window of the package. I don't think it matters. But just in case you prefer one that doesn't have that phrase.

If you call the OV phone #, the first message you hear is that if your card was purchased before a certain date, in the past, your card is good anywhere. If your card was purchased after that date, it is only good in the US. Presumably they added this to the card, and your store has some old cards that didn't have that printed on them. But neither of them is good outside the US.

Sorry. By "most" I meant the ones that turn you away. They won't listen to reason but just say no. I have personally had more success than failure overall.

Today, one of the conveniently located CVS stores by me refused to accept an Amex Gift Card, even though it was personalized with my name imprinted on the card, as payment for visa gift cards. The cashier insisted on seeing the card when I went to swipe it and claimed it was the new corporate policy not to accept it for gift card purchases. I seriously doubt that is true since I used the same form of payment to buy a couple gift cards at a different CVS yesterday, but who knows? Perhaps the gravy train is coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Well, the cashier need to see the card no matter what. They need the last 4 digit of the card. I have no problem showing it to them (mines are not personalized). Sometimes I read it to them so that they don't have to look too hard. Last night when I bought my OV, the cashier threw my AGC in the trash after I gave them to her to get the 4digit. After the transaction, I asked to give it back so I can keep them for my record. She picked them out of the trash and gave them back to me.

CVS master thread

I went to my usual CVS today (Ohio) to buy some OneVanillas and the cash register kept giving the error message "alternate tender". I tried three different credit cards and got the message each time. I'm going to try a different CVS tomorrow.

Bad choice of words on my part to say she "insisted" on seeing the card. They always ask for the card and I always show it to them. In the past, CVS has sometimes refused to sell to me when I try to use an Amex Gift Card that does not have my name on it to match my ID. So, I ordered personalized AGCs and have been doing fine with those this month until today. Today, the clerk voided the transaction after I handed her the card (as always) and she discovered that it was an Amex Gift Card, again, even though it had my name in raised letters on the card matching my driver's license. Most importantly, she said that this is CVS' official policy -- no gift cards of any kind may be used to purchase other gift cards. As I stated previously, I doubt she knows what she is talking about, but you never know. Take it for what it's worth.

Yah, it might be just the cashier or the store. I went to 3 locations within the last 3 days. No problem with non personalized AGC

I got the no gift cards for buying gift cards twice tonight at generally reliable stores. Sigh.

I have gotten that response too in some stores, and been able to use them in other stores the same day. At least for the moment seems to be variable. And I always try to slip it by without them seeing the card by just swiping and saying "the last 4 on this one are..." Sometimes it works, sometimes they still ask to see it.
