Looking at this thread, I would discourage anyone to be in the Hamburg, Germany area the next couple days, as this would make for a very uncomfortable stay...

Interesting in this regard is the fact that the Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten always required a buy-out during this time, while other hotels did not. The reason being that they couldn't possibly give priority to one party and this could make for some very difficult situations. Makes sense, right? I am not surprised Park Hyatt does not appear to have the same opinion on this, as they host both Mr Putin and Canada's Justin Trudeau. Note there is only one Presidential Suite in the hotel. But what else would I expect from Park Hyatt Hamburg?

Very true - steer well clear of Hamburg! In fact, Vier Jahreszeiten was bought out by the Saudi King. But given it's the G20, with 20 heads of state joining, and Hamburg doesn't have a wide selection of luxury hotels, it would be difficult to require buy outs.

According to most press reports, Justin Trudeau stays at the Atlantic Kempinski, together with Angela Merkel and Narendra Modi.

Or, you could have your staff not book your luxury hotel on time --- and therefore have to slum it a bit:

I heared something different. As far as I read no Hotel was ready to accomodate him, no official reasons told. One Report was about Vier Jahreszeiten which was (earlier or later?) book by Saudi king. One reason could be that they are afraid for protests especially before or after he is staying. Trump is a very hot potato in Germany at the moment.

My parents stayed at the Vier Jahreszeiten Hamburg last year while then-US secretary of state John Kerry stayed there too during an OSCE meeting. Boy, that was quite a nuisance for them to reach the property each time when they came back from their sightseeing tours as the area was secured by several police cordons. ID checks, bag checks and whatnot...They swore never to stay at a hotel again that hosts a high ranking politician at the same time during a state/official visit.

Noted this in another thread but we were staying at the RC Shanghai Portman when India PM Modi stayed there in 2015.

Huge PITA, they stopped allowing any vehicles in and out of the hotel and implemented a standard pre-9/11 airport style security set-up. There were also lots of individuals that I assume were security officials.

The biggest PITA was leaving for the airport - we had big heavy bags but because of the ban on vehicle traffic, we had to walk a few blocks to find a cab for the airport (thankfully with the help of a RC doorman who walked and hailed it for us).

Also interesting the police perimeter and police presence that showed up - a few protesters were quickly silenced and removed from the area in comparison to the days prior when there was free movement of people and not a police officer in sight.

I don't buy the blog story.

Gästehaus des Senats seems pretty good for the circumstances -- even if the FS, PH, AK and others weren't booked completely.

I have just returned from a week in Hamburg. Definitely wrong choice of week!! We were lucky to be far away from the demonstrations and riots, but the whole city was a nightmare and it was so sad to see what happened. We have, however, lived there almost 20 years, so we managed well, stayed in an airbnb appartment in a quiet residential neighbourhood, but noticed closed streets/restaurants/shops, loads of police and endless traffic jams (or empty streets). Planned the trip very long time ago, so back then I did not even think about checking if it would be something going on.

I guess with a G-V at your disposal you could make a day trip if you left Bali early enough and got into Jakarta late (and had military escorts along the way!)

From the photos in the media it looked like he didn't have much of an entourage and security detail of his own at all in Bali.

Apparently stayed at FS Sayan on Bali, and then at the Palace (or not sure what they call it) in Yogyakarta.

This came from an Aman staff member in Bali. I had no idea he was even there, but I specifically asked if he went to Jiwo and the staff told me he did not and stayed as a guest of the government.

I heard he had an entire battalion of Indonesian troops protecting him in Yogyakarta.
