New Aman/Janu + Azerai/Azumi + GHM/Ahn Luh - '24/'25-Edition

2024/2025 edition of the original thread, started in 2008

Every rumor & every finding about future openings of the great luxury resort brands founded by legendary hotelier Adrian Zecha.

The first part of the thread is about upcoming AMAN resorts: the brand, under which Zecha invented the highly personalized luxury resort concept 30 years ago. Since 2015 owned by russian real estate billionaire Vladislav Doronin, and now joined by Amans new "budget brand" JANU.

The second part is about Zechas own brands, which are actually AZERAI for "affordable luxury", and his new Japanese brand AZUMI.

The third part is about GHM Hotels, founded by Zecha as well, but since 2019 he and longtime partner Hans Jenni are out - and about AHN LUH, which is a chinese luxury chain partnering with GHM and originally advised by Zecha.

This updated thread continues the discussions of the recent ones (New Aman, Azerai, GHM & Ahn Lu Resorts - original 2020 Edition).

Here in the 4 threadstarters, every news and rumor is collected, trying to keep the whole list constantly up-to-date, from very old rumors to the newest. 👉🏼 Please contribute and comment every rumor you snap!

AMAN & JANU

UPCOMING AMAN - ANNOUNCED ON THEIR WEBSITE:

- Aman Nai Lert, Bangkok, Thailand, multiple times postponed. In Dec 23 I saw clearly from my Park Hyatt Bangkok room: They are still working on the building and the interieur, from my judgement opening not before late summer 2024. It's a highrise in front of very small Nai Lert park and in parts surrounded by a Mvenpick hotel, developed by a BKK real estate company. Located in ultrasmall Nai Lert Park, close to Central and Erawan shopping area https://www.nationthailand.com/property/30376029

- AMAN Rosa Alpina, Italy .First brought up by Epicura , Aman is investing in the Rosa Alpina hotel in Alta Badia, Dolomites: https://www.ff-bz.com/weitere-themen...ber-leser.html, https://www.journaldespalaces.com/en...tant-Chef.html
First it was bookable on the Aman Website, now it is closed until "late 24 winter season", with major demolition / new building work to amanize it.

- Amanvari, Baja California, Mexico, announced to open 2020, now pushed from 2023 to 2025. First nnounced on a cocktail party in San Francisco (attended and posted by Larkin). https://www.aman.com/resorts/amanvari

- Aman Beverly Hills (sic!): In it's own botanical garden (nice) inmidst cheesy Beverly Hills (not nice, not special, not amanesque), "just moments away from the storied streets of Rodeo Drive and Santa Monica Boulevar", set to open in 2026:
https://beverlypress.com/2022/06/hos...beverly-hills/, https://onebeverlyhills.com/, https://www.fosterandpartners.com/pr...-beverly-hills

- Amanmiami, Miami Beach, USA. Doronin looking out for location, saying in an interview with Bangkok Post: "My real estate company, Oko Group, is headquartered in Miami where we are developing several luxury residential towers, so we know the city very well. Miami has become increasingly sophisticated and and an Aman would fit well in this gateway city" https://www.bangkokpost.com/business.../lap-of-luxury. In his last interview he is aiming towards a 2023 opening. https://www.barrons.com/articles/20-...in-01580749299. Meanwhile, @chinmoylad and @Fc912 found articles (http://profilemiamire.com/miamireale...faena-district) suggesting that Aman will take over cheesy Hotel Versailles, Miami. If yes, let's hope they will choose a radical modernist architect who is changing the boring facade and to something architectonically spectacular!

- Aman Niseko, in a northern Japanese ski region, rumored first by Gallivanters, by Aventine and calledmetop (and by 5khours under the name Aman Mt. Moiwa). First officially announced by Aman for the year 2023, now moved to - haha - 2027. Design looks great https://www.aman.com/resorts/aman-niseko, but sadly it is again part of a development with three additional hotels, shopping and restaurants, and not a purely remote thing like the original Amanresorts...

AMAN PROJECTS:

- Amanrica (hopefully not "Aman Costa Rica"...): as rumored in this New Aman thread from 2011 on, finally it manifests itself as real, as Aman is already teasing it (https://www.aman.com/resorts/costa-rica) on their own website, and the developer (http://amancostarica.com) as well. It's on a yet unspoiled pacific coastline, but sadly other resorts will be developed nearby as well. I heard rumors about maybe 2021opening - let's see, if it ever opens! Flyingdoctorwu found the following article with formerly some good details https://travelsort.com/aman-costa-rica/ - but they deleted some of them, clarifying in an Feb 2019 update, that construction has not started yet.

- Amanalula, Saudi Arabia, three resorts in the desert, opening first announced for 2023 (haha!). Together with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), Aman will develop three distinct resorts of architectural excellence in North West Saudi Arabia, in AlUla, a place of very special natural and human heritage. Contracts signed by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Culture and Aman-CEO Doronin, marking the brand’s first entry in the region. First spotted by @chinmoylad.
https://www.hospitalitynet.org/annou...di-arabia.html

- Aman Diriyah Gate, Saudi Arabia, next to a Janu - and 36 (!) other hotels in some development area looking like a desert nearby Ryad https://www.hoteliermiddleeast.com/s...ith-two-hotels
First called here after a Twitter person called Tiffany Dowd was posting, that Aman „announced two new hotels set to open in 2026 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Aman Wadi Safar in the desert near Riyadh will have 78 rooms and 34 Aman Branded Residences & Janu Diriyah, near the Unesco Heritage Site of At-Turaif“ with 120 hotel rooms.

AMAN - SPECULATIVE / VAPORWARE / OLD STUFF

- Aman Mykonos, Greece, where also a Four Seasons is in the making. Rumored by a Philippe Servais on Twitter.

- Aman Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, USA, also rumored by Servais.

- Aman Canouan at the tiny southern Caribbean Island of Canouan, which is famous for its pink sand beaches. It is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Currently, Canouan is only hosting a Mandarin Oriental, with a Soho House and the Aman supposedly following up.

- Aman London, early planning, no site yet according to GK1998, mentioned again by FT in 2015 in Doronins urban-resort-context and repeated in his Bangkok Post interview

- Aman in Morocco's Mountains - Gallivanter is reporting, that they are also looking for a property in the mountains, which would als make much sense regarding the boring location of Amanjena.
- Aman in Morocco's desert": According to FlyingDoctorwu, Amanjena GM Nicholas was scouting spots for a tented camp in the desert

- Aman in Seoul, Korea, mentioned by seiknujnama and by Gallivanter's

- Aman in Bovina in US State of New York, spotted by bearbrick.

NEW AZERAI HOTELS and other ZECHAPROJECTS

Currently, there are 3 in Vietnam. "Azerai will open a new property every six months within the next 2 years" Adrian Zecha said in a Monocle Interview 2019 spotted by ngfan, but sadly that didn't work out. In another interview in April 2019, he was talking about a pipeline of "nine signed projects": HOTELSMag.com

- Zechaproject inmidst Sri Lanka north of Kandy, not clear wether the old Waterfall Landmark Hotel will be turned into an Azerai or something else at the end.
https://island.lk/hunas-holdings-ann...-adrian-zecha/

- Azerai Havana, Cuba. Gallivanter's twitter rumoring that Zecha already has a GM working there.

- Azerai in South America "in three years time" according to the Monocle Interview.

AZERAI CANCELLED

- Azerai in Bagan, Myanmar, cancelled by AZ for political reasons concerning the situation of the Rohingya according to the Monocle Interview.

AZUMI

"Azumi" is the name of the brand Adrian Zeche has been starting together with Japanese hospitality group Naru Developments. It is supposed to be modern luxury ryokan style designed by Shiro Miura, a Kyoto architect specializing in Japanese design & architecture.
There are two Azumis open by now: https://yubune.co/en and
https://azumi.co/setoda/en/, whilst it is not clear wether Zecha is still involved.

GUENOC VALLEY

A very huge and controversial project in a
"a fire-prone area near the Napa County line" in California, (https://guenocvalley.com/landscape) - with a shocking amount of 268 hotel rooms and cottages in five separate resorts + 385 residential lots with, where Adrian Zecha has a role as "partner" and resort creator. No opening date visible. Found by Kagehitokiri, first discussed here: chance of a zecha / gathy property - north of napa CA.

CLOSED or EXCOMMUNICATED since 2018:

- Azerai Luang Prabang: de-Azeraied and taken over by Avani

Aman Nai Lert in the making

I took the foto from my Park Hyatt Bangkok room (not so good hotel...) in Dec 2023. The highrise is the Aman Nai Lert, and the lowrise on the right side around it is a Mvenpick Hotel. The small park is Nai Lert park, the green house is "Nai Lert Heritage home" (seems to me that it could be part of the Aman), and the brown house is an existing event space called Summer House (maybe also bought by the Aman developers, maybe not). It seems to me that the Aman could be opened in late summer 2024 earliest...

Thank you . That is quite a bit of information. As a Los Angeles resident, the proposed Beverly Hills location makes little sense. The Waldorf is on the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd.
Across the street at Wilshire and Santa Monica is the legendary fountain and I can not believe that the BH city council would approve a large hotel in that location.

First it was bookable on the Aman Website, now it seems to be closed for summer 23 to make some renovations and amanize it.
this is definitely more than rumored at this point. It has been officially announced in press releases, and the site is fully under construction.

found this on Instagram, shows what it looks like last summer. They are really doing major works, not just interior updates.

Didn't you stay at Rosa Alpina at some point? Think I recall you staying there, but might be wrong. Someone here mentioned the hard product to be lightyears away from Aman standards but this may or may not be rectified now.

I did and its not just the hard product (which they are completely redoing apparently), but the location in the middle of the village, with the village main street on one side and the bypass road just below the hotel on the other side, with constant truck noise. No views, no seclusion, no Aman location.

I love the idea of a Wiki. So much of this is now out of date and with the collective knowledge of this group we could keep it up-to-date without expecting all of that to be done by one person, which is unreasonable/impossible.

The three-sided, low-rise building at the foot of the new tower used to be the Hilton. I stayed there a few times in the 1980s and in some ways preferred it to the Oriental because of what was then a very large garden and pool. Obviously much of the garden and pool area has been demolished to make way for the tower. It seems to me Aman has morphed into something I have zero interest in.

After some brief correspondence with the hotel (we tried to book for a stay last fall) my understanding is the closure is not to "amanize" but to renovate and expand ahead of the Olympics. I really like the old decor, so we will see where they go with the new. Granted they didn't have much of a selection of higher end rooms, but what does in the area?
