Most ranches are working ranches and are not primarily about riding. Dude ranches tend to be primarily about riding, but there are other activites available.

Whether not the OP should visit one depends on his/her desire to partake in the riding or other activities available (no prior experience necessary).

http://www.threeforksranch.com/ As you can see, many other activites apart from horseback riding.

Obviously talking about dude/guest ranches.

If you look at the photos, you can tell from the shoes and the hats that this is not a real ranch.

Check out the Dude Ranchers Association website.

Like I said, this is kind of a religious discussion. That said, if you haven't been to a real ranch and are not a complete city slicker, you should definitely give it a try.

Cibolo Creek Ranch

Did anybody mention this place www.cibolocreekranch.com? Stayed there 12 years ago and liked it a lot. Remote is the word on this place but nice to have this ranch when visiting the Donald Judd Foundation (www.chinati.org) and the town of Marfa and the Marfa mystery lights.

Does Big Sur count as remote? If so then Post Ranch Inn.

Does a AAA 4 diamond "B&B inn" count as luxury? If so, then the Rabbit Hill Inn in VT's Northeast Kingdom.

Does Ventana in Big Sur count? If so, we've stayed there several times. I've always wanted to make it to Rabbit Hill Inn.

We've eaten at Rabbit Hill and Post Ranch-- didn't stay at either but the food was good and we were certainly tempted to go back and stay.

+1 on PRI, a unique location and design but not for everybody (and no children IIRC).

PRI looks nice. Stayed at Bernardus Lodge once. I thought it was very decent.

Sorry to bump this thread a bit.

Thinking of doing a drive from Chicago to Denver, via Mt. Rushmore. Any luxury in South Dakota/Nebraska/Western Iowa or Minnesota that comes to mind? Canoe Bay seems promising but it's 100% non-smoking which isn't ideal for me.

Prairie Club...former cattle ranch became the region’s premier golf resort upon opening in 2010—though that was mostly by default, it remains an appealing place to spend a few days. Decked out in clubby dark wood and leather, the 40,000-square-foot lodge strikes a modern note; the vibe is Western, but the rural curios (skulls, farm stuff) are kept to a tasteful minimum. Larger groups seeking privacy might grab one of the luxury cabins perched on the rim of the Snake River canyon.
sounds pretty middle of nowhere, although not sure what golf scene is like

Thank you, Kage. Seems nice enough, although no emphasis on the rooms whatsoever. I'd be curious to try it for a night though.

twelve miles northwest of Santa Fe, on 336 acres, bordered by the Tesuque Indian Reservation; Federal lands; the Horcado Ranch area; and the old Jacona Spanish Land Grant. Situated at 6,500 feet, the site is contiguous to over 150,000 acres of open land
anyone heard anything?

To many good restaurants in Santa Fe to be locked in to eating on property. I think this really is someone's home and your a paying guest. Property has been around a long time, at least since 2000 when I lived in Santa Fe.
