AMANKILA in east Bali has been celebrating its 20th birthday this year and the resort has released a booklet that looks back on the past two decades. Aside from the insightful observations about the genesis of the property from Amanresorts' founder Adrian Zecha and architect Ed Tuttle, it's the stories and photos of long-term staff that most sum up this clifftop retreat. Many have been on board since the 1992 opening, such as receptionists Artha and Murdewi, while others, including barman Nengah (pictured), have clocked up more than a decade's service. Like most Amankila staff, Nengah lives in a nearby village and has other creative skills -- in his case, he's a top-class traditional drummer.

Yes, beautiful work - given to guests during anniversary celebrations - have one along with limited edition T shirts ( which I just wore leaving Amanpuri - rare for me to wear in public but Tracy will be pleased )

Zecha...envisaged as an ideal hotel: a place where privacy was paramount, there were no formal check-in procedures, you never had to sign for anything, minibar contents were complimentary, and the staff would anticipate – not merely respond to – requests, and remember your name

Free minibar a good joke
Except Bhutan never saw a complimentary minibar at an Aman, BUT an overzealous butler breaking into my room while my spouse got dressed to check the minibar while I was checking out and the front desk ladies were not believing me . (I will not disclose the name of this Aman because a) It's one of my favourite and b) I got so angry that they will NEVER do it again.)

Amangani...115-foot outdoor pool no matter how cold it is outside. Your feet won't freeze as the outdoor tiles are heated
