I had a 3 hour layover in FRA between 2 flights on separate PNR's. I missed my connection. The thing I was dreaded happened, and I was still lucky. ATL to FRA on DL was delayed in ATL for 2 hours due to weather. The flight was delayed another hour due to having to fly around weather, so my arrival in FRA was 15 minutes before my LH flight to TXL that was booked separately. I get to FRA and get stuck in passport control for 20 minutes. So, I missed my flight. I go to an LH counter and they were very nice, but since it was under 2 PNR's she couldn't move me onto the next flight. She suggested I go talk to the LH ticket purchase desk. Again, the man was very nice and apologetic. I am preparing for having to buy another ticket at full fare and he says he can get me on the next flight for a 60 Euro fee and will waive the fare difference. The next flight is an hour later. So, for me, the thing you fear happened and it wasn't so bad. It cost 60 Euros, but it could have been worse. Of course I would not leave myself only 3 hours on a separate PNR before the intercontinental flight, since that change fee would have been much higher (plus the fare difference could have been significant).

Just one more question (and apologies if this is the wrong thread - mods, please feel free to move it to the appropriate place if necessary!) - I've never missed a connection before, so don't know how these things work when connecting from one airline to another, albeit on the same booking. So if things unfortunately don't go well and we miss our connection in FRA, which airline is responsible for our onwards travel? I would have assumed it is SQ, as all flights were booked through them and they operate our homeward-bound FRA-SIN-PER flights. However I've read on several forums and in different threads that it's the airline who operated the delayed flight (which caused the missed connection) who is responsible for rebooking etc, which in this case would be LH as they are operating the SQ codeshare ARN-FRA - so now I'm confused! Can anyone advise? Thanks!

Once your journey has started and you misconnect because the incoming flight is late I think you are supposed to contact the airline which caused the delay, in this case Lufthansa. SQ may be the marketing carrier but for all purposes you are on a Lufthansa flight (e.g. LH check in, LH BP). There is a Lufthansa flight to SIN but it departs 5 mins before the SQ flight and won't be much use to you, so they should put you up in a hotel overnight. Even if your flight from ARN is late I'd try and go to the gate for the SQ flight anyway in case the departure is delayed. They may put you on the daytime SQ flight to SIN the following day with a connection to PER.

I am preparing to book a one way award ticket from VIE to LAX and would appreciate some help in determining the easiest connection at FRA. From VIE to FRA there are good options through either OS or LH. If I am interpreting the MCT shown using Expert Flyer correctly, it appears that the DI MCT for OS to either AC or UA is 1 hr 0 min, but for LH it is 1 hr 30 min. Is this correct? Does this imply it is easier to transfer from OS, as opposed to LH, to either AC (Canada bound) or UA (USA bound)?
I thought perhaps there might be a bus involved with the short haul LH flights, but not the OS flights. If so, this might account for the longer connection time.
We only want to book comfortable connections, so I would appreciate any clarifications. We will have checked luggage, but have no FF status. We will try to travel on an I fare ticket.

LH and OS flights between VIE and FRA are almost interchangeable and almost always use A gates (not bus gates) in FRA.
If you want to book comfortable connections I'd allow a minimum of 1hr30 and possibly 2 hours.

Don't pay any attention to what EF says about the MCT. AFAIK the the DI MCT for LH is 1 hour as you see in the wiki post. In any case MCT does not guarantee a connection.

As I previously posted a few months ago, I have a tight timeframe, i.e. 70 minutes to connect for my HAM-FRA-EWR connection with both flights being on LH and I will be flying J from HAM and FC from FRA.
Now that I have already connected through FRA for the first time and have a better understanding of the layout of the airport my question is that, while I assume my HAM-FRA flight will arrive into Terminal A, will my flight to EWR leave out of Terminal Z? Are there additional security screenings for flights to the US?
Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

You are correct that flights from HAM usually arrive at A gates (occasionally bus gates) and flights to EWR depart from Z gates. I think there is document check for departures to the US and random security check at the gate.
If your flight leaves from a higher Z gate (say Z56+) it might be quicker to leave the main terminal and walk to the FCT as Pier Z is quite long.

FRA does not have Terminal A or Terminal Z. A and Z are both in Terminal 1 which consists of several piers or concourses. Z gates are actually one floor above A gates in the same part of T1.

Those posters took taxis from the nearby hotel instead of walking with a lot of luggage, you do not need a taxi from the terminal.

Compare this with the length of Pier A/Z (as you see on this map on LH.com) and you will understand why it can be quicker to walk to the FCT than to some Z gates. The FCT is almost opposite gate Z50 which is the nearest gate to the central atrium of the new section of Pier A/Z.

Due to time, location and money requirements, I am strongly considering booking a friday morning BA flight from LHR to FRA arriving 09:40 and then booking an ElAl flight from FRA to TLV departing at 11:00. Is this OK?
Travelling Hand baggage only + online check in.
Thanks.

Thanks.
This morning's BA flight to FRA left on time, and touched down at 9.26. After a long taxi, we parked at about 9.40 in a remote stand with buses to take us to the terminal. No separate bus for business class
Bus left at 9.54 arrived at arrival doors at 9.57. Up escalators, followed signs to gate C6 from which ElAl flight to TLV leaves at 11:00. Long walk, but I walk fast, and got to gate C6 at 10:11am. Didn't go through any passport control, and only through security by the gate. I'm now waiting by gate C6.
So it is definitely do-able isn't it?

It depends on where (from which arrival gate) you start but from the last exit of the main terminal (opposite exit A1 marked with a yellow star) to the FCT (marked with an orange star) takes 3~3.5 mins to walk.

Since I only have a 70 minute connection time I am worried about going through security at FRA if I go to the FCT rather than going directly from the A terminal to the Z terminal. Are security lines long at the FCT. Any recommendation as to the cutoff gate as to whether to go to the FCT or directly to the Z terminal? thanks, LAF
I certainly do not want to add to any confusion, but you should consider the FCL B as a good alternative as you will get a car transfer to Z from there too.
By taking the tunnel to B and going through passport control before the FCL B you will avoid the security check completely. If you have a bus arrival you might get dropped at B Schengen anyway, making this a good alternative.
As a rule of thumb: cars from FCT to any gate and from FCL to Z will depart around the boarding time stated on your boarding pass. Depending on walking speed, I would say try and arrive at FCT or FCL B not less than 40 minutes before departure.

I never had to wait for security at the FCT, it is very civilized and only for F class pax using this terminal.
