I second this. After such a major cockup I don't think LH was in the mood of entrusting passengers to this crew. Whether this is justified or not remains to be seen, but it's clearly a liability.

Not so much the crew, but landing on a unserviced runway you will pick up a lot of debris in the engines and maybe run over a few things with the tires that need verification before going back into regular service.

LH CRJ lands on runway under construction at Katowice!

According to http://avherald.com/h?article=476dea26&opt=0

A Lufthansa Canadair CRJ-700, registration D-ACPJ performing flight LH-1360 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Katowice (Poland) with 51 passengers and 4 crew, was cleared to land on Katowice's runway 27 but landed on a parallel structure to the right/north which is to become Katowice's new runway 27. The aircraft rolled out safely, there were no injuries and no damage.

The airport of Katowice confirmed the aircraft erroneously landed on what is to become the new runway. Poland's Accident Investigation Commission has opened an investigation into the occurrence.

Good news is no one was injured. This was a potentially very dangerous error that fortunately turned out well.

Read about this recently, apparently the ILS system if off during the construction of the second runway.

Still, the strip under construction doesn't have any lights installed and none of the typical markings. In fact the only ones it has are the required "X" type markings for a runway that is not in use.

Surely with the ILS switched off the pilots had to have decent visibility to land, no?

Still, nothing that would prevent a skilled PF to miss the correct runway.

I fly to the airport in Katowice very frequently, as so were I a few times at the airside of it (there is a monthly Spotting Airside Day organised by the airport authorities, and the guests are chosen from the airport's facebook fans). I've seen the airport from different angles, was also standing on a new runway about 10 days after the incident occured. I'd rather say, that all the factors cited by the assosiated Pilots, ATControllers may be right (such as impaired visibility forced by the setting sun, or the relatively small X sign on the new runway (although the report and the Airport's services say it had exact dimensions, as described in all the aviation laws and orders)) but couldn't have been the only explanation of an obvious mistake performed by the Cockpit Crew. I'd tend to say, that unnoticing the huuge (and believe me, it's a majestic monster) concrete mixer placed about 50 metres from the runway's threshold even though you're forcing the sun beams means only, that these weren't focused as they were supposed to be.
