This game will most likely be broadcasted only regionally, so I'm predicting a late afternoon kick off (3pm, 5pm, or 7pm).

If you stay until the end of the game, it will take you about 60~90 minutes to exit the parking lot at Rose Bowl. So realistically, if the kick off is at 3 PM, you would have to leave at half time (around 5 PM) to make it to your flight at 9:30 PM.

OK thanks TWA884 and bzcat, I'll wait until they confirm the kick off.

I'm at the Rose Bowl Premium Pavilion attending a UCLA Bruin Watch Party. I asked about starting time for the Cal game. 7:30 pm.

Just catching up on FT, but FYI, the minimum charge is $17.50 plus tip ($15 minimum for all taxi fares out of LAX, plus the $2.50 airport surcharge). I know this well from experience (my parents live about 3 miles from LAX, so if they can't pick me up it is one of the options I use).

Some of the taxi drivers can be rather grumpy about those short trips from LAX, one sort of complained when I mentioned I tip more than I might otherwise because it is a short trip (along the lines of why would you do that)...

Christmas Eve layover

I arrive in LAX at 8:45 PM on Christmas Eve. I fly to Cancun the next morning.

I'm staying at the Four Points. I won't have a car.

So several questions:

1) Where would be a good place to have a reasonable dinner approximately 10 PM or later that works with the above?

2) Is there a way to use some hotel's shuttle buses to get to a good shopping or dining area? Is public transit even a possibility for this? Any easy way to do last-minute shopping, even at a Walmart?

3) Even asking this seems ridiculous, but is there an easy way to get to a church (Spanish-language is fine too) of any denomination with a nice Christmas Eve service?

4) Any other overlooked possibilities for using this brief time?

#3 actually seems the least absurd. But, I don't know the answer. I'd suggest calling the hotel concierge and asking what churches are nearby and then call them. One of them should be having a midnight mass.

It will be Christmas Eve. I suspect all stores will be closed by 10 PM. I also think most if not all restaurants will be closed by 10 PM. I'd start calling your hotel and the other hotels nearby and seeing how late their restaurants will be open that night. You might need to switch to one of the hotels that has 24 hour room service.

Four Points has 24-hour room service, so I think I'm OK there if that is the only option.

For #3, Google maps suggests possibilities, and apparently even possible by public transit. How advisable is it to be walking in that area late at night?

Walking should be fine, especially if you are male. If you're wandering further into Inglewood certain areas could be iffy.

I'm female. Well, I'll just see how the situation looks when I'm there. I may or may not want to go out after all.

I know of a number of churches in the general vicinity (around La Tijera, in Westchester), but I would not recommend a female walking there at night. It is probably safe to walk north on Airport Blvd (stay on the sidewalk on the west side of the street) during daylight hours, but sketchy at night once you get north of the Post Office.

Call a few of the churches that interest you, and see if they can offer any suggestions. Some church communities will offer to arrange assist from a regular congregant, with transportation for a visitor.

I have a 9 hour layover landing 11pm and leaving 8am Fri night... im considering cancelling hotel and renting a car instead(the next day is all travel so I can sleep on plane). What can I do? Anywhere safe I can park and doze off for a couple hojrs if need be? Would save me around $100 and I doubt ill be sleepy by 11pm so I figure a hotel may not be worth it. Thoughts?

Hollywood Park or Hustler Casinos? And to clarify, is this a layover Thursday 11pm to Friday or Friday 11pm to Saturday. There isn't that much to do in LA between midnight and 6am.

Gone forever.
Crowd catches the tail end of horse racing at historic Hollywood Park

The bugler in his green coat and top hat tried to sound upbeat as he blew the traditional "Call to Post," but he might just as well have been playing a dirge.

Down by the rail, Todd Matzner listened with a cigar stub clamped between his teeth.

"I wasn't going to miss this, no way," the horse racing die-hard said. "Even if it's kind of sad."

Sunday marked the last gasp for Betfair Hollywood Park, a 75-year-old racetrack that had once been a sparkling jewel of the city.

The Inglewood landmark, which has fallen victim to declining revenue industrywide, will have its grandstand razed and its racing ovals dug up.

Shops, offices and residential units are planned for the spot where fans once cheered for horses such as Seabiscuit and Zenyatta, not to mention renowned jockeys Bill Shoemaker and Laffit Pincay Jr.
