Santa Monica is probably fine for both nights. If I were staying, I'd likely opt for an airport hotel Sunday night just because I detest LA traffic.

As PTravel notes, the Malibu Getty museum is nice, the drive is great, and you could stop along the way for a meal.

Here is info on the Getty Villa museum

It looks like you need to sign up for free tickets.

There are many choices that would be just fine. But not knowing how you define "high," it's difficult to be more specific.

Depending on traffic, it takes around half an hour to get from Santa Monica to the LAX rental car places, which are all off-airport. I wouldn't take the freeways at that hour, and I'd avoid Lincoln Blvd. as much as possible. I assume you'll have a GPS. (-:

Pretty much all of the LAX-area hotels have free shuttles. I'd use Priceline if you decide to make the last-minute change in plans to stay near the airport (and don't care about SPG points).

7 hour layover at LAX -Admiral Club?

DIA to Lax then Wife and I have 7 hour layover before flight to Maui, all on United. Worth buying one day passes to Admiral Club or other suggestions>? Thanks.

Presume you are referring to the "United Club" (Admiral is AA)? The answer is yes if you do not intend to leave the airport. However with seven hours you might consider renting a car and driving around Los Angeles' west side for 3-4 hours. There are very attractive beaches up and down the coast that are literally adjacent to the airport. Car rental prices at LAX are often lower than most major airports. All in with gas you may be talking $55-65.

Or a day room at one of the airport hotels. For two of you, likely to cost less than "club" and you can take a nap, go for a swim and so on.

Yes, Admirals Club is American. United has two lounges (United Club) at LAX, in Terminals 6 and 7. I recently used the one in 7 and it was large and nice. Small array of snacks and drinks, and showers (which I did not use).

Since it will take a good 20 mins.+ to disembark, at least that much to get to most off-site rental locations (via shuttle bus; each company has its own bus), plus time to rent the car, and, at the end to gas up and return the car and take a shuttle back to LAX, plus boarding for your fight to Maui will start at least 30 mins. before departure (and you'd have to go through security again), you'd end up with limited time for touring, especially if rush hour traffic is involved.

If you have a specific location in mind, perhaps consider this, or using a taxi or Flyaway shuttle bus (to downtown L.A.), and see something in downtown (e.g., Union Station, Olvera Street, Grammy Museum). Could even take a bus to the Getty Center, but that may be more hassle than it's worth.

Personally, I'd stay at LAX.

Just to clarify to the OP: ALL rental locations at LAX are off-airport. My experience of them is that they are the worst I've dealt with anywhere, so be prepared for a little teeth-gritting if you use one. :) Can't say I've tried them all, but I've used quite a few.

What time of the day will this be? And are we talking about a weekend or a weekday? That's going to factor in pretty large with regards to any recommendations.

There are showers there?! D@mmit! I'm now on record as saying that I've never been to a UC that has a shower. :o So I'm going to stop in the Terminal 7 UC the next time I'm there just to look for it. :D

Again, it really depends upon the time of day and day of the week, but I could imagine that the Getty might be easier than Union Station or Olvera Street. Of course, the FlyAway bus does make all that pretty accessible if you're willing to stray that far from the airport.

If it were me, I'd spend my time down in Manhattan Beach, California, to grab a bite near the ocean and take a walk along the beach. But since the OP is heading to Hawai`i, I can see how that might not be the highest priority for this layover. :)

LAX: 3 hr layover in T4; visit colleague in T5?

A colleague and I have concurrent 3ish hour layovers in LAX coming up in a couple of days. I'll be in T5 on DL; colleague will be in T4 on AA. Can I pass through TSA into T4 with a DL boarding pass and visit with my fellow traveler?

Am I correct that both T4 and T5 have TSA Pre✓?

You will not be able to enter T4 with your DL BP, nor can your colleague enter T5 with his AA BP.

However, you are correct that both T4 and T5 have PreCheck, so if you choose to meet landside, you'll both have an easy time clearing security again.

I would suggest either the Starbucks in the baggage claim area of T4, or just taking a shuttle to one of the nearby hotels for a bar visit.

And I would be remiss if I didn't suggest a hop onto the Parking Spot-Sepulveda shuttle to head to In-n-Out.

Hi,

I was going to suggest the Encounter Restaurant/Bar but I see it is now closed.
