Just take the free Parking Spot (Sepulveda) shuttle. Or walk... it's faster than waiting for a cab and circling the airport.

Not to mention that you're already at around $8 when you leave the airport.

And that you're liable to make any cabby really happy when you announce your destination.

Does L.A. have rules like NY where cabs can't refuse a fare, no matter the distance?

Not sure if they do or not, but my parents and I have never had a cab refuse a ride within Westchester (similar distance as to In-n-Out).

Note that all cab rides from LAX have a minimum $17.50 fare ($15.00 minimum + $2.50 surcharge).

5 hr evening layover?

I'll be arriving at about 9pm from YVR (so no customs) and departing at 2am ... is there much point in leaving the airport? If so where would one suggest? I am a bit more reluctant to use public transit as schedules tend to be more sporadic at night. I wish there was a "lights of LA tour" - I'd be game!

additional request for suggestions for LAX layover

Well, Delta cancelled the 4:40PM direct from LAX-ATL on 5/27. Arriving LAX from Fiji at 1:20 PM and now we have to take red eye back to ATL, leaving us around 7 hours till the 10:45PM. I guess the crew wanted the holiday weekend off. (Mem Day w/e). Best place for dinner and a sunset?

Would you spring for a taxi or are you fine with taking a bus?

The closest place would be Manhattan Beach, which has several decent restaurants near the beach and is about a 10 minute cab ride. But it's a semi-sleepy beach town after dark so not much to do after sunset.

The most common route for people on such layover may be to head to Santa Monica... lots more dining options and some stores stay open late. You can take a cab (20~30 minutes depending on traffic) or take the bus ($1 each way, about 30~40 minutes bus ride).

Thanks for getting back. I'm game for the bus. Leaning towards Santa Monica if I have the time.

Thanks!

Check-in your luggage so you don't have to lug it around. The bus ride only takes about 30-40 minutes, as bzcat said. The long part is the waiting. You have to take the Lot C bus to the bus depot, then wait for the line 3; there is no Rapid 3 at the times you'll be needing the bus.

If you take the 3 up to Santa Monica get off either at 4th and Santa Monica (downtown area) or Lincoln and Montana, either location will offer better restaurant/time killing options. Do not get off at Lincoln and Pico, nothing around there whatsoever unless you want a Tommy's chili burger.

Agreed.

There lots of things right around 4th and Santa Monica. Easy walking distance (or right at) the Santa Monica Place mall (good views from the food court on the top level), the 3rd Street Promenade (converted street to a pedestrian mall), restaurants on Ocean Ave (good views out towards the ocean), the Santa Monica Pier, and various other places.

#3 bus runs every 20 minutes late at night so yea... make sure you get to 4th/Santa Monica on time for your bus :)

5 hours

So I have 5 exact hours at LAX, I'm arriving from an international flight and heading into a domestic flight.

1) Taking out the immigration process (1 hr) what can I do?

2) Should I take the later flight which will leave me with 1 hour and a half more?

3) Anything near but outside the airport.

More details please: weekday/weekend, time, carrier/terminal, budget (taxi/public transport).

Assuming everything goes swimmingly on the inbound, I suggest Santa Monica. Can kill anywhere between 1-3 hours: go to the pier, look at the Pacific Ocean; walk along the Third Street Promenade, get some food.

1 hour through immigration AND customs is pretty optimistic if you are arriving at TBIT. Maybe possible if you are arriving at T4 or T5.

All times are GMT -6. The time now is 4:36 am.
