There is very long thread on what to do during a layover in LAX. Look it up for some good ideas.
However, if you quickly clear customs, you would have enough time for 2 hours at the beach, or have the ability to walk to In-and-Out Burger |
L.A. airport. 11 hours to kill
I am a fit and active early 60's streetwise female. At the end of November I am travelling through LAX with 11 hours between flights. I land at 13.25 and take off 22.30. Can any one suggest the best way of using my time there? What can I expect the weather to be?

Please take a look at the http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/los-a...rea-forum.html. In there, you'll find links to threads that may help. You might want to pay specific attention to http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/los-a...d-threads.html. In fact, I'll bet a moderator will be merging this thread into that one, so it might be a good idea to skim through at least part of that thread and see what others have said for some good ideas. You might also want to glance at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/los-a...siting-la.html. I also recommend consulting the very comprehensive guide to Los Angeles sights at http://wikitravel.org/en/Los_Angeles. If you read the above-linked thread and look at the Wikitravel article (and any applicable sub-articles), you can perhaps help us point you to something that interests you (L.A. is huge, and there's LOTS to do across a HUGE geographical area, so different things will sound different to different people!). Please feel free to post any more questions you may have! :) |
I'm looking to go shopping - we're overnighting at LAX (crown plaza) and our flight out is not till 5 pm the next day. Any ideas for a decent mall on a Sunday ?.
I was thinking of santa monica as I have been to their shopping area before, but I was wondering if I was missing something that might be closer / better. Thanks |

Clothing? Electronics? Food? Souvenirs? Luxuries? Art? Antiques? Give us a hint what sort of shopping you are interested in. Most major malls open sometime between 10 am and noon on Sunday. |

12h at LAX
Hey!
I will have a 12h layover at LAX from 9am to 9pm and wonder what I should be doing with my time. I will have lounge access, but there should be a few more thrilling things to do than that. I have been to LA, so sightseeing is not my major concern. But maybe there is something in a convenient distance I should check out. Thanks for the advice! |
I stayed at the Travelodge, they had a 8am-8pm rate for around $50 after coming from SYD and flying onto Europe in the evening.

I would definitely hit the In and Out burger!
|
You have enough time to get out a stretch your legs. I would take the free Airport shuttle "C" (to the bus station) or "G" (to the green line station) and hop on the Big Blue Bus #3 or R3 and go to Santa Monica. 75 cents one-way fare... can't beat that!
Or take the Parking Spot "Red" shttle to In-N-Out burger...grab some food, then cross the street and catch #3 bus as above to Santa Monica. It will take about 40 minutes to get from LAX to Santa Monica on #3 bus or about 30 minutes on R3 bus. http://www.bigbluebus.com/busroutes/...asp?routeid=33 |
How about taking the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus #3 all the way to the UCLA Ackerman Terminal, change for the Metro Rapide 761....and visiting the Getty Center (ask the driver to call-out the stop), a great art museum overlooking Santa Monica & the coast. Come the same way back, stopping for dinner on the way in either in Westwood or Santa Monica.

Is either of the flights international? That affects the time you'll have available, especially if you're arriving on an interntional fight and, thus, need to go through Immigration and Customs. You know that your bags will be checked through to your final destination? If not, and you need to recheck them at LAX, you MAY not be able to check them 12 hours in advance. If in doubt, phone the airline. There is a service for storing luggage near (but not at) LAX. I do second the ideas of Santa Monica (I enjoy walking on the pier) or the Getty Center, if you haven't been to either one (be sure to account for rush hour traffic if this is a weekday). I've seen references here to the Flight Path Museum, on the far side of LAX (need to take a taxi or bus), but haven't been. Something kind of kitchy: I enjoy dining in the Encounter Restaurant, in the spider-shaped building in the middle of LAX. Great place for plane-watching. Food wasn't cheap, but was pretty good, the last time I was there.
