You'd want to bid in the LAX area.

Los Angeles 10 hour layover
I'm going to New Zealand in a couple days and was wondering what there was to do during a 10 hour layover. We get into LA around 1pm. Any ideas?

10 hours gives you a MONSTER window for really, really absurd LA layover stories. Lets be honest, thats what its all about right? If you want to hit up the LA cliches, a 10 hour layover gives you more than enough time to hit up downtown hollywood, check out the walk of fame, stop at Pinks for dogs, a stop at some 'famous' bar joint for a $10 imported beer, and make it back for your plane. Do i recommend this plan? Meh... not so much. Not unless you will never be in LA again. What i recommend is to head off the beaten path a bit. Do you like hole in the wall restaurants? do you like beaches? do you like smiling hotties? Well good sir/maam, come with me. LAX is smack in the middle of a FANTASTIC area, but travelers just dont know it. Both north or south, you really cant go wrong. Either way you will find fantastic (and reasonably priced) bars, beautiful people, delicious food, and far too many stories. North Bay To the north is the del Rey's, Venice, and Santa Monica area. Venice and Santa Monica have a MASSIVE amount of bars and restaurants full of great food and beautiful people. In Venice, Abbot Kinney Blvd is the place. Tons of bars, hotties, and even celebs. WARNING: Venice is a FULL of very hippy/weird people, as well. You have been warned! Restaurant Tip: Mao's on the corner of Venice and Windward has the most incredible Chinese food in the area, and at a reasonable price. Just remember: You can bring in any booze you want. No booze on the menu at Maos, and no corking fee. So get a 12 pack before you enter, and enjoy your meal. Im no kidding. There is a tiny corner market around the corner that has great wine/beer... get it, bring it in, and smile when they WELCOME your booze into Mao's. South Bay To the south, we have the 'South Bay', a name for the Manhattan/Hermosa/Redondo/Torrance collective. Here you will find less crowded beaches than Venice/Santa Monica, and a far less hippy outlook. The bars off Manhattan Beach Blvd and Hermosa Ave are heavily populated on the weekends, but are more relaxed during the week. Restaurant Tip: Pollo Inca on the corner of Highway 1 and Aviation has fantastic Incan food. You didnt know such a thing existed? Well, trust me. Get the Pollo Saltado and have your mind blown away. Also, the Boogaloo Cafe on Hermosa Ave (a little off Pier Ave) has a huge array of fantastic beers on tap and a monumental appetizer known as Killer Shrimp. Its pricey, but sooo worth it. Killer Shrimp and Stone IPA on tap.. its heaven. Be aware, they have a blues band on most nights, and the cover can get overboard. There are a huge number of Hermosa bars to visit if Boogaloo is overboard, though. This post is getting GIGANTIC already, but ive gotta cut it off. There is a huge amount to do in a 10 hour layover. Honestly, if i was headed through the area on a flight, i would voluntarily take a big layover. Who could deny a margo, an incredible plate of Mexian food, a rare beer, and a hottie? |
Great post...I'll be on a 10-hour layover enroute to Hong Kong in July and will check it out. BTW, I've splurged on a Corvette convertible rental:cool:

Or you can PM me and I will meet up with you. I am so use to meeting up with random people on Flyertalk and Yelp that it seems second nature to me.

I've been reading through this forum and I have found a lot of good information! This seems like a great place to get some inside tips. I will be having a 12 hour lay over in LAX in July coming in around noon. I'm flying from EWR and I'll be taking a Qantas flight operated by American Airlines with the final destination in Brisbane. I guess I will be needing to claim my bags then recheck them? If that is the case I don't know if I'll be able to get out of the airport. I was planning on going to the in-n-out (I'm originally from the west coast and I really miss the burgers). Is there anything else thats good for someone that is under 21? Thanks in advance for all your help.

I have visited Santa Monica on prior layovers. However, recently my focus has been to sample some great food. I considered Asian and Mexican restaurants. However, I eliminated the Asian restaurants as I am heading to SE Asia for 3 months.
The goal of my layover (6/12/08) is to have some great Mexican food. I intend to head over to my favorite Mexican restaurant, La Casita Mexicana. This inexpensive restaurant is only around 20/25 minutes from LAX, very doable on a layover, if you rent a car and GPS. (Do a google search for reviews.) Explore PS Try the mole or Chile en Nogada (meat stuffed peppers, drenched in a pecan cream sauce, dressed with bits of pomegranate). http://www.casitamex.com PPS Okay, I am actually staying overnight so that I can eat dinner at La Casita Mexicana. I will also get the chance to try breakfast at La Casita Mexicana before heading to LAX for my flight. |
5 hours at LAX
I have a 5 hour layover in LAX ... anything to do, i will be departing out of TBIT, which i know has little.

Hotels with day rooms or early check-in in LAX area?
I arrive from GUA at 12Noon and depart for IAD at 23:30.
Any LAX hotels that offer day rooms? Or, early check-in and I'll just check out early? Thanks |

There's a good Thai restaurant around the corner from the In-N-Out burger. It's called Ayara.
And instead of taking the taxi, you could always ride The Parking Spot Sepulveda shuttle, which is located right next to In-N-Out. Last time I did this, I even told the driver of my intention and he didn't mind one bit ^ |
You can also walk, it is right next to one of the runways. Depending on your age/health and all that stuff. If you are in average shape or better it is a very easy walk. If you have a membership at 24 hour fitness there is one in the office building next to the Crown Plaza. Also a nice walk from the terminal. I have an "all club" membership with 24 hour so when I have a quick turn in LA I usually go to the In-n-Out and grab a burger and then go to 24 hour and grab a shower (have to bring your own towel though). Or if I need the shower worse I reverse it and go to the 24 hour first. The Crowne Plaza will also let you ride the shuttle.
There is also a subway line you can access from the airport, I have never done it, but looked into it one time. IIRC you take a bus to a subway station and then you can access the public transit system of LA. Five hours is a good bit of time but you don't want to get too far away either but there is a bunch of stuff you can do within walking distance of LAX. |
