LAX to Pasadena
Hello-
I am contemplating a 12:50p midweek arrival into LAX. No checked bags. I'll be one of the first off the plane. Hertz #1 Gold car waiting (fingers crossed). Would like to be in Pasadena by 2p (405 to 110 ok at that time?).
How (un)reasonable is this timeline?
How much time would a taxi probably save (and if you know, how much will it run)?

2 p.m. sounds a little optimistic to me. 2:30 sounds doable.
Figure 10 min to get from gate to curbside.
10 min to catch shuttle to Hertz
60 min LAX to Pasadena - I would take the 105 to the 110. The 405 is a mess at the 10 interchange. You will probably hit some traffic right around Downtown LA and the Convention Center. I'll also warn you that the 110 North of Dodger Stadium is narrow and has lots of blind curves - it's not like a modern freeway.
Taxi would be about $50 or so.

Sorry, I meant the 105, not 405. The last time I did that 105-110 drive it took 30mins but it was 9p. On the return I drove the 710-105.
More info: I have an option to BUR, but it arrives at 12p, forces me to connect (vs the LAX nonstop), meaning I have to get started at an unseemly hour from the east coast, and puts me on a transcon w/o power-in-seat.
It's a tough choice. I am hoping someone with experience can tell me the LAX option is doable -- or lay me odds... e.g. 80%

Welllll,I have done it in 25 mins.It has also taken me 90 minutes.
If you run into the very common traffic jam sig alert on the 110 then you detour via surface streets-not fun and easy to get lost if you are not familiar.
No way to get an earlier flight into LAX?
How important is the meeting?
We do have some nice hotels in Pasadena BTW

ok ok, i've decided to try BUR for the originality and the added bonus of catching a car with companion there. the earlier LAX nonstop is a bit too early at 11a, and has similar turn-offs to the BUR route. thanks again.

Just for future reference, if you want to reach Pasadena during the day, the best route is the 105 to the 605 to the 210 W. Taking the 110 during the day can be a nightmare!

That sounds like the best route. I was thinking 105-110, but that is because I am usually thinking Glendale-centrically

In rush hour, the 605 is faster than taking the 110 downtown. I've done it many times. Now, if you know LA well, the 110 can be faster, if you're prepared to exit downtown and take side streets. I've gone over to the 2 and then taken the 210 E. I've also joined the 101, taken Alvarado to the 2, then the 210. A limo driver I once used, took the 2 to the 5 to the 134 to the 210. It seemed really fast, even in rush hour, but he also knew a really good short-cut from the 110 to the 2, which I've never been able to find. The 605 was definitely born in a kennel, but she works out best for me.

the idea of going from west l.a. all the way out to the 605 and doubling back on the 210 is nucking futs. even with no traffic, you're guaranteed to add an extra 20-30 min. and the 605/10 interchange is always jammed.
during the day, the 110 north has only 2 significant slow spots: the transition from the 105 to the 110N (unless you're in the carpool lane), and the interchange with the 10 just before downtown. once you get past dodger stadium, the 110N is a breeze--even during rush hours.

As I said, I've done this scores of times. There are times when the 605 is faster. I check Sig Alert in the Continental PC before I leave; I know exactly which route to take.
If there is no traffic, sure the 110 is faster. No, the 605/10 isn't always jammed; it slows, but it isn't always jammed. Plus the car pool lane ends about half a mile pass the intersection--which is great.

Of course, Pasadena extends pretty far to the east. Maybe if you're headed someplace like Rosemead or Sierra Madre or somewhere else crazy east of Lake.
I don't go east of Lake ('cept to get my bike fixed).

It really depends on the time of day, but in general, it's never occured to me to take the 105 to the 605 and backtrack into Pasadena on the 210, and I've lived in East Pasadena for over eight years.
I have taken:
405 to the 10 to the 110
105 to the 110
405 to the 101/134/210
I also often take the 10 into San Gabriel and take either Del Mar or San Gabriel Blvds. into Pasadena.
