The Uber application won't allow UberX pickups within a designated radius of LAX. Just take a courtesy shuttle to a hotel or parking lot and call for UberX when you are on the shuttle.

I have done this about 25 times without an issue and usually never wait more than 5-10 mins for a pick up after reaching the hotel or parking lot.

Forgive me for being thick but I'm trying to work out the current state of play for Uber and there seem to be somewhat conflicting accounts.

Is this how things stand?
- Uber Black and SUV can pick-up and drop off in LAX - including picking up on the arrivals level.
- Uber X can only pick up outside LAX proper but can drop off at the terminals.

You are correct on both counts.

I've had success just moving my pin location to outside of LAX proper, then calling the UberX driver to explain that I'm actually at Terminal X. Worked more often than not.fff

With 25 data points I am curious which hotel or parking shuttle is best?

Let me make sure that I understand your question correctly. Are you looking for Trader Joe's store located between LAX and the Port of Los Angeles World Cruise Center?

If so, there are several Trader Joe's locations that may work for you.

The one closest to LAX is at 8645 S. Sepulveda Blvd. - it is about half a mile north of the airport not too far from In-N-Out. It is in the opposite direction from San Pedro, but probably involves the shortest detour.

Additional stores located along the way to San Pedro and not too far from the 405 Freeway are at 1800 Rosecrans Blvd. in Manhattan Beach, 1821 Manhattan Beach Blvd., also in Manhattan Beach, and 19720 Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance.

If you go to Find a Trader Joe's site, use Zip Code 90045 for the location.

Thanks. We went south on Sepulveda then west to the TJ on Rosecrans. Then onto the 405. Not sure it affected the distance charge at all. Plus it was easy in and out as the TJ was on the south side of Rosecrans.

I personally prefer taking the shuttle to LAX Marriot.

It is located right off of Century Blvd and has a large half moon driveway so the driver has easy access to pick you up. Also, there is a patio area in the front of the hotel with chairs to sit in while you wait for the driver to pick you up.

I'm thinking taking the Budget shuttle would also work, since it puts you on Airport Blvd.

So I just flew back from MSP last Wednesday for work and here's an update on the LAX thing from the uber driver (who seemed informed):

--Ubers can now legally pick up from Sepulveda Blvd outside the airport. So if you walk out past Park N' Ride, you should be able to request one. If you can't, you might have to walk a block closer to around 98th and Sepulveda (like I did) to request it.

--Ubers can, as always still drop off for departures at LAX. Don't try to flag one down without using the app. Drivers won't pick up under any circumstances as it's a major fine.

--By June, Uber can drop and pick up at all terminals. Supposedly they won their case against the cab union ^

Also taking a hotel bus to around where the Four Points is where most of the Ubers post up. I think that's 96th and Aviation.

Really? That would be sweet as my next LAX trip is the first week in June...

calwatch Apr 29, 2015 3:26 pm

The best free way to get an Uber is still the Lot C shuttle to the "off airport shuttle" area at 96th and Sepulveda. No need to take a random hotel bus.

Not so fast.
Los Angeles Times - L.A. pushing regulators to legalize ride-sharing services at LAX

<snip>

In a draft agreement dated April 27, Los Angeles airport staff members suggested charging a $4 fee for each passenger who is dropped off or picked up using a ride-hailing service. Taxis pay a $4 fee, assessed by airport officials and passed on to the rider, each time they pick someone up. Drop-offs are free.

The document also proposes a "geofence" along the LAX perimeter that would tell the airport when ride hail drivers entered, dropped someone off, picked someone up and left again.

Drivers would be required to wait in a nearby parking lot for fares and then would be restricted to the departure level for pickups and drop-offs, meaning passengers who arrive at LAX would have to go up to the second floor to catch a ride. Drivers would also be restricted from parking and waiting within two miles of the perimeter.

<snip>

For the regulations to become official, the Board of Airport Commissioners must approve the plan, and the airport must approve a licensing agreement with each ride hail company.

Airport commissioner Jackie Goldberg said she would have "a hard time" voting for regulations that didn't include requirements for better insurance policies and a fingerprint-based background check of Uber and Lyft drivers.

If airport commissioners approve the regulations, several members of the Los Angeles City Council will consider using their veto authority to overturn the decision, Councilman Paul Koretz said.

"If everything were regulated the same for cabs and ride-sharing, it wouldn't be as much of an issue," Koretz said. "These companies dodge most regulations, so we should expect them to do that here, too."

I'm able to grab a fare estimate/pickup from LAX directly. Put in the Staples Center (~18mi away) as my destination and all (...as of right now....) services don't have a surge. Prices/all services offered are:

uberX: $21-27 uberXL: $40-51 uberPLUS: $50-63 UberBLACK: $80 UberSUV: $100 UberLUX: $102-129

Here's a direct link to the route i did it for and it should show you the current prices for that exact same route when you click it...surprised there wasn't any surges right now tbh.

So it sure seems like they worked things out over the past couple months? interesting

Nothing has changed for UberX, yet. You won't be picked up at any LAX terminal. Personally knowing (airport commissioner) Jackie Goldberg, I wouldn't bet on things changing very soon. Things move very slowly in Los Angeles politics and the city council doesn't have this at the top of their agenda, either.

Well, that's fair... there is no reason why Uber shouldn't be charged for $4.

The forced upper level pick up is actually a competitive advantage over taxi ^ I much prefer pick ups from the departure level.
