Thanks all

No kids, so not worried about schools at this stage in life.

We are hoping to maybe find a townhouse so we can have a courtyard also, but will just see when we get there. The Mrs wants to pursue her Arts career over there so she wants either a 3rd bedroom/studio or yard to be able to work in.

One question i did have, on Yelp and the apartment rating services, i assume it is just those that have bad experiences that tend to rate the properties? Does anyone give the review sites any weight when choosing an apartment?

I don't give any credibility to apartment rating services. I live in a wonderful apartment and the only reviews have been negative ones posted by those who were evicted. I suggest staying in a hotel for a few days and take time to explore the area. One of my sons works in Warner Center and is so happy with his working environment. Good restaurants and good quality of work life. He and his family have a home in Tarzana, which is 15 minutes away and quite nice. I can ask him for suggestions re: housing in the area.

OK that's what i thought, thanks

Part of my contract involves work putting us up for a month in serviced apartments, so we will get a feel for the area and the wife will be able to walk around and check out each of the apartments during different times/days to get a feel for them.

Frankly, most apartments south of Victory Blvd should be fine. North into Canoga Park, while there are pockets of O.K. apartments (Especially near the Orange Line station on Canoga between Victory & Vanowen)....there are also some terrible ones, and it is on the edge of the "Little Barrio," where crime & filth can be an issue.
Excellent post, that as a local I will second. ^

Well the big move happens first week in July. Will be living in serviced apartment through work for the first month, and after looking online are hoping to get a townhouse instead of an apartment, but will see what we can find.

I anticipate no credit rating may be an issue, but hopefully a letter from work and a couple months deposit upfront should suffice.

Thanks for everyones help in this thread so far, i'm sure I will have more questions closer to the date

Hi All,

10 days till our big move!

I was wondering if some of you fine people might be able to provide me with a rough price guide for contents insurance? Just want basic theft, fire etc for about 20k worth of goods in a rented apartment.

I know it varies based on location etc, but what is the approx range per month? Here in Aus it costs us about $30 per month i beleive

Should be less than what you are paying in Australia. Figure between $200 and $325 annually.

You'll want to ask for renters' insurance in CA.

Can you elaborate? Is that the type of policy I should look at getting?

It is essentially home owner's insurance for somebody that rents instead of owns the place that they call home. Probably just different terminology than what you're used to is all.

We have cheap rental insurance through AAA. Our car insurance is also through AAA. Not recommending that company but you may get a better deal when insuring auto and rental with same company.
Welcome to L.A.g

Starting to get settled here in LA. Have corporate housing for a month and i havent worked for a week so it feels like a holiday at this stage. First day in the new office tomorrow so will probably get more real then.

Also may have found a place for us to lease permanently already which is nice, will probably get confirmation tomorrow.

Had all the joys of applying for a SSN already, have not bothered for a drivers license yet

Remember to set an appointment with any DMV office so you cut the big line... think of it as an elite line
