I could understand warnings for "south of Russell", but not really Tropicana, which is still well within the South Strip. These days, I see some people walking south of Russell even after sundown (probably heading towards the new Town Square development), but I would avoid it just because there's less pedestrian traffic south of Russell and no "security overlap" since there are no casinos.

Interestingly, I spoke on the phone with a client in LV last night. He indicated that in the past month, his car has been broken into (not on the strip), his wife's car's gas tank had been siphoned, and his house was robbed. He indicated crime is on the severe upturn of late in the area, but that the city was trying to step up police presence in and around the strip to protect its cash cow tourists. Additionally, LV has been now placed on the list for the top places for car theft in the country.
I still think Vegas is safe for travel, particularly if you don't do stupid stuff like partying til your wasted then getting into a car of a complete stranger. Cmon Javon, use some of that Al Davis $ to buy some common sense.
