I was staying at mgm for two nights 9/12 ci and 9/14 co. At around noon on 9/13 I returned to my room and found that my carry-on type bag was gone. I looked for the chamber maid who was in a room nearby; she showed me her printout, listing me as checking out on 9/13, and so when she cleaned the room at 11:15 am. the bag was sent to the garbage room.
A supervisor was called, but the bag could not be located. I gave them an estimate of the contents and they reimbursed me for $150, since mgm "screwed" up, their records showed me as co on 9/14, the info given the cm was incorrect. [I had a second bag (which was not in the room at the time) with more valuable stuff (clothing etc.)--the bag which was thrown out had lots of reading material, books, magazines etc.]
It would seem to me that anything found in a room be sent to lost and found, to be kept for at least a week, not to the garbage room. Also, the official co time is 11:00 am, so even if I were really departing on 9/13, 15 minutes seems like too short a time--I could be checking out late.
I am contemplating, attaching a note to any bag I leave in a room, stating when I am really checking out, and noting: DO NOT REMOVE THIS BAG.
Has anyone had a similar problem, with any hotel?

I think you may have been a victim of scale...the housekeeping staff wanted to clean your room ASAP, although I imagine that you'd have things out in the bathroom and other areas in the room that indicated you were still there?

As for disposing of things in the room vs trashing them, thats a tough call...again the scale of these hotels is unreal. The lost and found would have to be a huge space that would allow for everything left in a room, sorted, and accessable. In properties with 4000+ rooms that doesn't seem likely. The places would have so much follow-up they'd probably have to outsource things.

Next time it happens, list off the $2500 tux that you had in that bag for the black tie event you attended and other expensive items that would not normally fit in the safe. I'm sure that MGM is covered to a 'determined amount' for loss/theft/damage...

I too am somewhat surprised they would just 'trash' your bag.

Some time ago at the Venetian, I left the ac adapter cord for my laptop computer in the room (about a $150 item). I didn't remember until the next next day when I got home and it wasn't in my computer bag. A quick call to the Venetian Lost and Found not only concluded with them indeed having my cord, but they overnighted it to me at their expense - a generous gesture, in my view. :-:

That one act on their part has put them on my long-term goodwill list and contributed to many more stays, often at $500 a night or more. Perhaps it's the caliber of hotel that makes a difference, or it may be the item, or simply YMMV.

I guess this uh, "scale" is what I experienced at the Fairmont in San Francisco a couple of days ago. Check out time was 12pm, but we decided to take the red eye back to Atlanta that night and paid for another 1\2 day and extended the checkout time to 5pm. The maid came in around 11am and did the single half-knock followed by a swift opening of the door thing. Thankfully we were dressed. We informered her we'd be leaving at 5, but we'd like our room freshened up a bit while we went to lunch. I left a tip.

The same lady comes bargeing in at 3. No knock this time. My wife explained, again, that we were really going to be there until 5, so no need in coming back. I'm annoyed at this point. 4 o'clock rolls around, and i'm having it out with the airline after being transferred five times since I'm technically going to be flying out the day before my original ticket, and they don't want to change it even after I agree to pay the costs and they tell me there are 40 seats left on the plane In the middle of this, the maid comes in, AGAIN, without so much as a knock She had limited english comprehension, but I think she got the point after that one.

Most of the chamber maids at las casinos I've dealt with, barely speak English (and I don't speak Spanish), so trying to explain something to them is a difficult task for me.
In reference to my op, when I stay in a room I generally "live out of my carry-on", I rarely have things placed in drawers or closets. So it could look like I abandoned my property--but some further checking should be done before disposing of these items.

something like that happened to me but with "gifts" I bought, the bag just disappeared from the Hotel room, I didnt complain but I got very upset.
Obviously it was someone from the hotel (I wont mention the hotel name).

You should have called the police and filed a theft report. As OJ has taught us, you cannot take items from someone's hotel room that do not belong to you.
