I too am somewhat surprised they would just 'trash' your bag.
Some time ago at the Venetian, I left the ac adapter cord for my laptop computer in the room (about a $150 item). I didn't remember until the next next day when I got home and it wasn't in my computer bag. A quick call to the Venetian Lost and Found not only concluded with them indeed having my cord, but they overnighted it to me at
their expense - a generous gesture, in my view. :-:
That one act on their part has put them on my long-term goodwill list and contributed to many more stays, often at $500 a night or more. Perhaps it's the caliber of hotel that makes a difference, or it may be the item, or simply YMMV.
In any case, sorry to hear of your bad news.
