Are upgrades charged per segment?
I'm sorry if this already has been asked, I couldn't find it when searching. I also wrote the Helpdesk, but the answer they gave me didn't make things clearer. My question is simple though, due to bringing extra weight I thought I would upgrade to C on my trip HEL-AMS-VIE, but not on the return. How many miles will this cost me? 10000 for HEL-VIE, or 20000 for HEL-AMS, AMS-VIE?
Any experiences?

As far as I'm aware you only pay once.
Are you SURE you want to do this, though? If you have miles coming out of your ears - fair enough. But if not this seems like a waste of miles for me. You get 10 kg of extra baggage in C. Wouldn't it make more sense to just pay for your extra baggage? I wouldn't waste miles on a European upgrade - don't forget that Europe Select is just Economy with a meal thrown in.

To answer your question, according to the KLM site you're ticket is for the whole stretch and as long as you just have a connection in Ams and not a longer stop-over it's counted as one flight since they don't have direct flights for your iternary

What about round the world segments ? I'm shortly going to book a round the world passport fare with the minimum of 3 stopovers....Tokyo...Vancouver.....New York and home. Looking in the handbook, and working on a continent to continent one way upgrade...the mileage required seems to be pretty generous...assuming that seats are of course available.

I agree with everyone here, no point in wasting the miles. I would rather pay and courier my extra baggage then waste 10,000 miles on a ES.
Its only an extra 10kgs, try and bring this down to 6-7 kgs and you might find that most check in attendants will let that pass. But then that is a slight risk.

interesting point though ...
if you upgrade from the UK via AMS to North America (yyz, in my case), i found the upgraded segments were only the transatlantic ones and not the feeder to AMS. there's no biz class as such, but seating down the front would have been appreciated - select seating has gone and you're at the mercy of when you check in. i was an hour early and still could only get a seat at the back of the fokker. so much for being a PE!
i'd called FD in ams' to query all this and they insisted i couldn't get down the front. were they wrong?
