Z is the cheapest business class ticket available, it's usually the most restrictive and earns the lowest number of miles for a payed business class ticket.
The conditions change according to the ticket and not only J vs. Z.... where are you flying to?

J usually has more flexibility, more miles and a much higher price tag.

No my ticket says Z on the ORD-CVG leg as well. KLM.com says my seat on the ORD-CVG flight is Delta One but I thought Delta One was only on international and jfk/lax/sfo flights so that's probably just business, also considering it's a small CRJ-900.

My ticket says Z on the ORD-CVG leg as well, but that flight is operated by DL so no idea if that's correct (never flown delta before). KLM.com says my seat on the ORD-CVG flight is Delta One but I thought Delta One was only on international and jfk/lax/sfo flights so that's probably just first, also considering it's a small CRJ-900.
I was just wondering, did you have a Y ticket and then upgraded or did you buy a business class ticket to begin with? upgrades have different booking codes.

That's just a KLM IT glitch, I noticed that when you have a ticket with multiple stopovers it will sometimes take the first class of service marketing name and replicate it to the rest of the segments (regardless of the actual classes offered onboard): for example I was doing a PEK-AMS in world business class and then AMS-TLV in business Europe but it showed up as WBC as well on KL's website.

For a longhaul ticket I booked a few days ago, KL wanted 4,500 in Z/D, direct flight but no flatbed guarantee. With one stop, EY, QR and TK were about one third cheaper, and they all of course offer flatbeds. KQ wanted only 1,500. The latter ticket was fully flexible to boot, with only a 100 cancelation penalty.
Guess what I went for.

It's a marketing name for Business class with flat seats.
It's available for long haul international flights and some JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO flights.
