Difference between J and Z

Hi everyone,

What's the difference between J and Z in wbc? They both seem to have the same conditions, so I'm just curious what the difference is.

J usually has more flexibility, more miles and a much higher price tag.
Z is the cheapest business class ticket available, it's usually the most restrictive and earns the lowest number of miles for a payed business class ticket.

The conditions change according to the ticket and not only J vs. Z.... where are you flying to?

Thanks for explaining! I'm flying to CVG with a layover in ORD, but upgraded through KLM's twitter account so that's probably why I have a Z ticket (or maybe not haha).

So I'm guessing you are flying CVG-ORD with DL in Y and then ORD-AMS with KL in business class (Z)? If I may ask, how/why did KL twitter team upgrade you? miles?

No my ticket says Z on the ORD-CVG leg as well. KLM.com says my seat on the ORD-CVG flight is Delta One but I thought Delta One was only on international and jfk/lax/sfo flights so that's probably just business, also considering it's a small CRJ-900.

That's just a KLM IT glitch, I noticed that when you have a ticket with multiple stopovers it will sometimes take the first class of service marketing name and replicate it to the rest of the segments (regardless of the actual classes offered onboard): for example I was doing a PEK-AMS in world business class and then AMS-TLV in business Europe but it showed up as WBC as well on KL's website.

I was just wondering, did you have a Y ticket and then upgraded or did you buy a business class ticket to begin with? upgrades have different booking codes.

Yeah I figured, ORD-CVG is such a short flight. I booked economy and then upgraded. But I've never paid attention to the booking codes before, just started to wonder after reading about it on here haha.

If you upgrade to Delta One it should say (OP). ORD-CVG is domestic thus first and should say (RP) or did you buy up to Z?

KL's fares sometimes make me laugh!

For a longhaul ticket I booked a few days ago, KL wanted 4,500 in Z/D, direct flight but no flatbed guarantee. With one stop, EY, QR and TK were about one third cheaper, and they all of course offer flatbeds. KQ wanted only 1,500. The latter ticket was fully flexible to boot, with only a 100 cancelation penalty.

Guess what I went for.

It's a marketing name for Business class with flat seats.
It's available for long haul international flights and some JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO flights.

Here is another fun thing to laugh about - KL fare names:
J flexible - entitles you to no flexibility:
