789

Some info on the 787-900 introduction:

- 16 aircraft to join the fleet in three years, starting in 2015

- cabin configuration 30J/260Y

- lie-flat WBC seats will differ from the new ones currently being installed on the 744s, to ensure commonality with AF.

Questions!

Are these new aircraft replacing the MD-11 fleet or the 747 fleet?
Are those crews transferring to the new aircraft?

BTW - I'm struggling with some of the dutch in the articles (although its good practice!) but if what I can read is correct then these people seem...how can I put it?...somewhat "out of touch" with economic reality?

I'm reminded of some of the communications from BASSA a few years ago

The last MD11 will already have left the fleet well before the first 787 arrives. The 744s are all getting new WBC seats, so I doubt they are on their way out anytime soon.

The unions? Not sure what planet they think they are on.

According to luchtvaartnieuws.nl, the first 789 flight will be AMS-AUH-BAH on October 26.

Other rumored destinations are Cairo, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Quito-Guayaquil, Vancouver, Havana, Chengdu, Tokyo Narita, Rio de Janeiro and Fukuoka.

The WBC seat will be the same as the new AF Affaires seat in a 1-2-1 setup.

Is it only the configuration or will the seats be the same as AF uses? Given my limited experience with both new J cabins, I prefer AF

A year to the day after the last MD-11 flight arrived back at Schiphol!

If and when this is confirmed (the KLM booking tool still shows that flight as a B772), I may even look for a seat on it!

The article says AF and KLM are going to use the same seat in Business Class. If this a new type or if the seat is the same seat as Air France already uses is not 100% clear to me.

This is indeed uncertain atm. AF is (very slowly) rolling out an excellent new J seat on their 777. I recall that AF was considering to install other seats on the A330, 350, and 787, but it was not clear yet what and how. I also recall that KL waited to take decision on their A330 depending on AF's decisions.

Considering their enthusiasm to install 10 on the 777, I wouldn't count on 8 on the 787...

Ugh... that could get ugly. QR usually is pretty generous with space (e.g. 9 abreast on the 77W, 33" pitch) but their 787s are 9 abreast, 31" pitch and are very much disliked by pax. I hope KLM doesn't do anything stupid like that.

Considering that KLM is in the process of upgrading the 777-200 from 9 to 10 abreast as well...I think it is pretty clear they stand behind the "squeeze as many as possible in" theory. They had plenty of time to evaluate the 777-300 and apparently decided that 10 abreast is fine. I'd assume the same will apply for the 787.

It NEEDS to be the Cirrus reverse herringbone seat the same as AA , CX , DL (and US) ... if not then I dread to think what they have in store for us ...

Looking at the seatmap I would expect EC to either be 45 or 54 seats (and not 48).
