Seat selection on JetBlue
Is seat selection done only upon check-in, either online (24 hours before the flight), or at the airport (i.e., not when you book your flight)? Looking at JetBlue for IAD-LGB non-stop vs. Southwest for IAD-LAX (with a stop at MDW). We'd then drive to the Upland/Ontario area. Offhand, JetBlue looks better in this case. Flying directly to ONT on Southwest would cost more.

No. You select your seats when you purchase the tickets.
If you go through the booking process on jetblue.com you will be given a screen to select a seat after you pick a flight and enter traveler details (but before you enter payment information).
Have you looked for Southwest BWI-LAX? May be cheaper. Virgin America/United tend to also have good deals on IAD-LAX.
