If you go through the booking process on jetblue.com you will be given a screen to select a seat after you pick a flight and enter traveler details (but before you enter payment information).
Have you looked for Southwest BWI-LAX? May be cheaper. Virgin America/United tend to also have good deals on IAD-LAX.

Yes, I checked Southwest, out of both Dulles and BWI, but total price about the same, times not quite as good, it would not be non-stop, and landing at Long Beach would be a little more convenient. Also, interestingly, it would work out for rental cars: we want to leave the car at BUR 3 days later, and Budget has the best price, but while they would allow picking up a car at LGB and leaving it at BUR, they would not allow picking up at LAX and leaving it at BUR.
