You may get lucky, but next week seems like a better deal.

I find myself enjoying with the cherry blossom viewing in more "local" areas, such as along the river from Nerimatakanodai station to the Shakuji Park area. A nice walk under the blossoms and one doesn't have to deal with the drunk crowds and the blaring music/karaoke one often finds in the more popular and well-known venues.

Is this a reference to the Cherry Blossom Kamikaze Squadrons trained to guide their ohka ("cherry blossom") rocket-powered glider bombs into Allied ships in the last year of World War II?

Off to London on Monday for a few days, so Sunday it is. Anyway, since it's just an excuse for a get together we're more concerned about rain than how many sakura we see.

The six day forecast doesn't look too promising.

Another thing to note is that because of screwy weather this year, cherry blossoms will come to Tokyo before Osaka and Kyoto. Apparently, this is the first time in 10 years that this will happen.
When we were in Japan last spring - 95% of the blossoms were gone in Tokyo - but things were lovely in Osaka a week later. So I'm not exactly sure how they judge these things.

By the way - I agreed with your comments about Kyoto. I enjoyed Kyoto because we had a terrific guide (we learned a lot from him about contemporary Japan) - but - overall - I liked Tokyo and Osaka better (they aren't beautiful cities - but they're really big and exciting).

In terms of blossoms - I've mentioned it before. If anyone is in the area at at the right time - don't miss the Osaka Cherry Blossom Festival. Hundreds of trees lighted by the river - hundreds of food stalls - thousands of people. One of the world's best street fairs IMO. Robyn

Now that is bad news! I'll have to pray to the weather God.

"... The sakura's blossoming mechanism is activated by
colder-than-normal air. That mechanism will switch on
earlier in Shizuoka, where this past winter's coldest gale
blew, than in Kagoshima, where the average temperature is
high but the drop in temperature was late..."
