Another thing to note is that because of screwy weather this year, cherry blossoms will come to Tokyo before Osaka and Kyoto. Apparently, this is the first time in 10 years that this will happen.
When we were in Japan last spring - 95% of the blossoms were gone in Tokyo - but things were lovely in Osaka a week later. So I'm not exactly sure how they judge these things.

By the way - I agreed with your comments about Kyoto. I enjoyed Kyoto because we had a terrific guide (we learned a lot from him about contemporary Japan) - but - overall - I liked Tokyo and Osaka better (they aren't beautiful cities - but they're really big and exciting).

In terms of blossoms - I've mentioned it before. If anyone is in the area at at the right time - don't miss the Osaka Cherry Blossom Festival. Hundreds of trees lighted by the river - hundreds of food stalls - thousands of people. One of the world's best street fairs IMO. Robyn
