Changing Planes at Narita
Hi Folks,
Hope this hasn't already been answered (couldn't find it when searching, but I may have missed it). I'm looking to do a JFK-NRT-AKL (well really JFK-NRT-CHC-AKL) routing using miles, and it seems to work using two different ANA awards, one on ANA from JFK to NRT and one on Air New Zealand from NRT to AKL. So, I'm going to be changing planes at Narita, but with two tickets. I'd have three hours and ten minutes to make the connection.
First off, does anyone know if I could check baggage straight through, even though they're two different tix?
Second, do I have enough time to clear immigration, get baggage, check in at Air NZ, and still make my flight?
Thanks!

I believe you can check luggage thru.
I also believe you have to change terminal at Narita - which is a shame (especially since most Star Alliance is now in Terminal 1) - but 3 hours is plenty. You won't need to clear immigration and customs - just transit from one terminal to the other.

Since the two airlines are both *Alliance, I would not expect there to be any problem at all to check luggage through. I have not checked luggage on these two particular airlines, but I have checked luggage on two tickets frequently. And, as the previous poster has said, Air New Zealand is in Terminal 2, while ANA is now in Terminal 1.
It is really no big deal to transfer between terminals - they have an airside bus that runs about every ten minutes or so. I think I would have had a tough time finding the bus on my own, but at Narita, everyone is so helpful that you will just ask anyone and they will direct you to the bus.
Have a terrific trip!

As mentioned you don't go through Immigration and Customs if you are in transit, you do however go through a security rescreening, however that shouldn't take forever to accomplish.
