HELP with Hakone Ryokan
Parents are heading to Japan this weekend. They are in Tokyo 4 days then head to Hakone for the Round Trip then from there they head to Kyoto. They will spend one night on the Hakone Round Trip, preferabally at a nice Ryokan with hot baths. However, they dont want to spend some outrageous amount.
I promised I would find them a placed but kept putting it off. I would like a place somewhere in the middle of the round trip, not right at the beginning, maybe something on Lake Ashi...
this is for a saturday night, july 1, anyone have any ideas on how i can book them something quickly?
It doesnt have to be a Ryokan, they would stay in a regular hotel too, but since they r staying in western hotels in tokyo and kyoto, i thought it would be nice to do one night at a comforatable Ryokan.
The other issue is that they are mostly vegetarian but do eat kosher fish, so i need to find a place that can cater to their diet...any ideas?
thnx!

I stayed at a beautiful traditional inn in Gora on my first trip to Japan, the price was less than 8,000yen per person with evening meal and breakfast included.
However....
No English was spoken (I think they must have asked a neighbour to translate the fax I sent to make my booking)
Although the place was once a luxurious Ryokan, it seems to have been relegated to a Kokumin Shukusha (people's inn), so the food was rather basic and served in a communal dining area. There were no private toilets/washrooms and bathing was shared. The people who ran it were quite elderly. They were able to cater for my request of no meat, but I wouldn't chance on their being able to refine a special meal request any further.
This inn is not in the habit of dealing with foreign guests, so I would only recommend this place to someone who had taken the time to research and study into Ryokan etiquette.
It's called the Taiyo Sanso and contact details are impossible to find on any website, but if you think this might be an appropriate place for your parents, PM me. Just be aware that this is not the kind of gaijin friendly 'comfortable' ryokan that people in this forum usually rave about.
(just found one more mention of the place here: http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/20863 which says that it is the one reasonably priced option in Gora)
One last thing, many of the inns are closed on one day of the week. I think the Taiyo Sanso did not accept guests for Thursday evenings, and many others are closed on Wednesdays - this may affect which inn they can stay at. OOPS! Just noticed your folks will be there on a Saturday - that might really narrow down your options at such short notice... good luck!!!

Let's see. Less than a week out, top tourist destination, special meal needs, no Japanese. You don't ask for much, do you?
Here is a link to an English-language booking service that I trust. I've linked the page for the Hakone offerings. You will have to investigate the various properties and inquire as to whether there is availability at such short notice. You might also put in the information about meal requests. I've found that this service is very good about replying quickly - usually within 24 hours.

As LapLap said - good luck!

Hi
Went through several forums using the search function, my apologies if this question has been discussed before and I have overlooked it.
I will be travelling to Tokyo from April 27 to May 1 (Yup, this is the golden week
) with 2 friends. We are thinking of staying a night at a hot spring resort in Hakone. Was wondering if there is any good recommendation that is reasonable priced (less or around 40,000 Yen per night in total for 3 persons). In particular, would prefer those with a separate room for the privacy of my 2 friends. I recall that previously, I have stayed in a resort hotel in Izu where 2 of my friends slept in a western double bed with partiton and the 2 of us slept in the living room on futon.
Many thanks again for your invaluable experience sharing.

Too Many Choices
I'm baffled by all the choices for lodging in Hakone and how hard it is to figure out total price. My folks will be visiting in mid-October. We are thinking of taking Odakyu Romancecar Freepass down Saturday and returning late Sunday. I understand this is a peak season due to the fall leaves. We are looking for hotel/ryokan that has western style rooms with in room bathroom. We would be interested in one that includes both breakfast and dinner. Two that we saw on link above are Hakone Hotel Kagetsuen and Hotel Green Plaza Hakone at these two links:

Any feedback on these properties?
As I said, I can't figure out pricing. If we wanted to stay to under 45,000-en per room, what would be our best choices? I see you book hotel as package through Odakyu service center in Shinjuku; is this a good deal? Can October be booked already (seems that online booking sites don't go that far out)?
thanks,
Marc
