STEAK! please

OMG. I just read the Morton's thread and am dying for steak. I can't wait till I get back to the states.

What should I try this week? I am right at Tokyo station. Never had Kobe, but don't know prices.

Thanks

Somewhere near you:

It's a bit late for lunch now, so the prices will be considerably more than 1,800yen but Pickles made the following recommendation a couple of months ago:

Morita-ya, in the 35th floor of the Marubiru (Marunuochi building 2-4-1 Chiyoda Ku). Old-style Kyoto beef restaurant. 200g steak, soup, rice, salad, pickles, for 1800 yen (lunch time only!)

Tel: 03-5220-0029
http://www.moritaya-net.com
Maps with how to get there: http://www.marubiru.jp/05_access/access.html

I think the evening meals start at 5,250yen.

Special selection sukiyaki course

* Japanese Cattle sashimi or Japanese Cattle hitting
* Meat cooking 150g
* Vegetable
* Boiled rice * red miso soup * capital pickle or noodles * red miso soup
* Fruit
11,550 Yen

Pine sukiyaki course
* Meat cooking 150g
* Vegetable
* Boiled rice * red miso soup * capital pickle or noodles * red miso soup
* Fruit
8,400 Yen

Bamboo sukiyaki course
as above (Pine)
6,820 Yen

Plum sukiyaki course
as above (Pine)
5,250 Yen

I think they have steak too from 7,870Yen:

The Kyoto meat special selection stake course
250 g Roast 13,120 Yen (Fin 14,430 Yen)
Japanese Cattle sashimi OR Japanese Cattle hitting and meat cooking, vegetable salad,
Boiled rice * capital pickle, red miso soup and coffee * dessert

200 g Roast 10,500 Yen (Fin 11,550 Yen)
Japanese Cattle sashimi OR Japanese Cattle hitting and meat cooking, vegetable salad,
Boiled rice * capital pickle, red miso soup and coffee * dessert

180 g Roast 9,450 Yen (Fin 10,390 Yen)
Japanese Cattle sashimi OR Japanese Cattle hitting and meat cooking, vegetable salad,
Boiled rice * capital pickle, red miso soup and coffee * dessert

150 g Roast 7,870 Yen (Fin 8,660 Yen)
Japanese Cattle sashimi OR Japanese Cattle hitting and meat cooking, vegetable salad,
Boiled rice * capital pickle, red miso soup and coffee * dessert

Kyoto is very near Kobe geographically, but this is the best you're going to get from me as I don't eat meat at all. Kobe beef will be a LOT more expensive (and people have told me that the REALLY good stuff tastes just like lard.)

And as for Sir...

...just checked...

nope!

Looks like the meat at Moritaya is "wagyu", so Japanese beef. It's not likely to all be from Kobe, but since as Americans we tend to use "Kobe" where Japanese would use "wagyu", it's fine.

Re: the menus at Moritaya, I'm going to take a stab and say that "Japanese cattle hitting" is tataki, which is basically tartare.
Capital pickles are Kyoto pickles, which IMHO are the best ones around.
"Fin" should be filet. Other than that, while it's computer translation, it's fairly clear. There's sukiyaki, shabu shabu, "oil-yaki", and steak.

But I don't see the 1,800 lunch on their Japanese menu (there are places that like to hide the cheap ones, though).

Wagyu, Schmagyu, there is plenty of good meat to be had in this town and I think I just figured out where we are headed on Thursday or Friday.

If you want big-style beef, can't go wrong with Porterhouse, on Gaien Nishi Doori not far from the Nishi Azabu crossing. Ain't cheap, though, so prepare to spend at least 100 USD per head.

How about a Brazillian style place? "Barbacoa Grill" has an all-you-can eat deal which I've enjoyed in the past. Does wonders for your figure... not.

It's located quite close to Omotesando station - so it's not exactly in your part of town. But only a short subway ride away...

Two of the very places I had in mind gents.

Pickles, quality-wise do you rate Porterhouse?

Also, a great fallback when needing red meat is YAki Nikku pretty much anywhere around town.

And of late (post 4/25/03) the Oak Door is a good feed too.
